What you need is cooperative effort of neighbors to facilitate getting perpetrator arrested and charged with a crime. 90% of crime is committed by .001% or less of population. Take this one dude out of circulation and petty theft in a 5 mile radius will plumet. If law enforcement is too lazy to do their job after scumbag is caught red handed by a neighbor there's other ways.
I think I related this here not long ago but here's the way we handled what appeared to be a minor crime wave. Tools, tires, fuel and other things were disappearing and getting worse with time. After it became obvious sheriff was too busy to investigate, a few of us set up cameras similar to what you are considering. If someone was too far away to get there in a hurry when alerted, they called someone closer to go investigate. A couple of young teens were soon, caught but despite them naming who they were working for,the adults weren't arrested. Partly because underage are protected from subpoena to testify if parents so choose.
Things slowed down for a while then picked back up. I got an alert at locked gate 200 yards from a building where equipment and supplies are stored. When I arrived I took keys from his ignition, pistol off seat and turned his headlamps on. Right away he began running up the drive yelling get away from my *$@(! truck you *#@^. I yelled "hold-um",,,,,, we will be gone in a minute, we just stopped to whiz. With that the dogs were off down the drive barking and looking for what it is they need to herd. I don't think my dogs would attack a human but they will try to herd anything from a cow to fence post if I encourage them. And "push-um" causes them to ratchet it up. When he yelled that I better call "these &#@(* dogs off" I replied They aren't my dogs but I wouldn't "PUSH-UM",,,,,if I were you. By this time I'd used cordless drill to put holes in sidewalls of tires. Loaded dogs and we were gone. Early next morning I called sheriff to report a truck blocking access so that farm employees can't start working. Truck was towed and impounded. No more problems with things walking off.
At Mom's homeplace there aren't any neighbors anymore. It's all commercial around there with very few houses & people near the farm. The deputy I spoke with said there are 2 young guys about a mile away who cause trouble which is why he suggested hunter camera.
There isn't really anything of value left in Grandparent's vacant house.
Growing up there we never locked anything and never had trouble except some tresspassed to fish at the lake.

I agree with MapleLeafFarmer as a system with local storage (NVR) & notifications would be my preferred way to go... (not Lorex; but it is the type of system I use at our home & I'm in the industry...)

But if you don't have power or internet where you are going to install the cameras they won't work... & with those systems you have to be willing to run the cable...

If you want to look at a solar powered cellular solution that is more security driven then a typical trail cam, take a look at VOSKER. We have been using & selling their products for the past few years & they help fill a niche with very good response times & with some AI built in to help with identifying vehicles & humans... (Oh there camera tech is built by a well known trail cam company... software is designed more for the security side of things)... Just something to look at...

First thing, buy several low end dead cameras for "dummy" cameras. Put them up so it looks like you just did a poor job of placement.
This tends to make the people who casually lurk around (if they have any brains at all) to go look for easier targets that are not monitored.
Then when you do get a few working (more expensive) cams try to set them up so they are very difficult to spot, but still cover the areas of interest.

If the criminals break in during the middle of the day when there is perfect lighting, drive slowly past the cameras up close and don't have license plate protectors the cameras above will do a great job.

At all other times expect blurrycam and photos of unidentifiable people. When it's low light or dark and headlights are on you would be lucky to identify the make, model and color of a vehicle.

Point taken: you get what you pay for.

If someone wants license plates, I think a license plate camera is needed.

All the best,

Peter

I've had zero luck with the small plastic solar panels that you get with most cameras or lighting. They last less than a year in the south Texas sun. The plastic just hazes, crazes or fogs over, and the so-called rechargeable batteries die a brutal death in the heat. Unless the solar panel is glass and the batteries are something other than NiCad, I wouldn't even consider it down here. The whole point is solar panels are supposed to work in sunlight. You can't mount them in the shade.

I agree, I have a Tactacam camera and you cannot make out a license plate in most light conditions. You can order a hi-res image to be sent to you for easier ID. I tried that a couple of months ago when I had a guy I didn't know at my gate, I never received my high res image. I never investigated why I did not receive my image. Maybe I should figure that out in case I do need it someday.
