You Know You Are Old When

When you went to the airport the men wore suits, the women wore dresses and all the airplanes had propellers.
And you walked from the terminal out to the plane and climbed up a portable stair to enter the larger aircraft. Through the rain or snow, and kids got to go look in the cockpit. And my favorite all the really good looking stewardess.

A daily occurrence for me at my age:

I remember going up to the cockpit on Eastern Airlines in 1980, and getting a free pilots wings pin from one of the pilots. Probably kept that pin until I was a teenager, when girls became more interesting than planes.

Speaking of which, my glasses may be colored by the fact that most of my flying is international, but with very few exceptions, the stewardesses are still a heck of a lot more attractive than general population. Just don't call them "stewardess" anymore!

Still have my PanAm wings from my visit to the cockpit at age 4…

The stewardess brought me up and I wanted to stay.

I was a bit to old to be offered that opportunity when I first flew, but on occasion on the short haul puddle jumpers did get offered the opportunity to sit in the copilots side.
I was 19 on my first airplane ride from Albany NY to (I believe) Savannah airport courtesy of Uncle Sam on my way to Parris Island.

Who had a crystal radio with a wire stretched out their bedroom window.
Head phones at the ready
I made one from plans in some magazine when I was maybe 11. It worked, but all I could get during the day was our crappy local station and at night there was a jumble of stations you could only sorta tune. Got a transistor radio for my 12th birthday and never looked back.

First time I flew was when I was in my mid-ish 20s (mid 70s). Mix of prop and jet planes, with prop ones mostly on shorter routes. It was fairly dressy still, but that was changing fast. Fine by me...I've never liked getting dressed up, haven't worn a tie in 40-odd years, and don't plan to ever again.

When I was 12 (77 now) I bought a 8 transistor Channel Master (Sanyo) radio. Here the UP of Michigan after 9pm I could get

WLS in Chicago and KAAY (I think) in Little Rock, Arkansas. Finally broke when I was in the Air Force in Okinawa.

One of oddest plane rides I had was flying from Seville Spain to Frankfurt Germany on a C-47. You sit facing backwards.

My cousin who is very beautiful was flying Paris to Salzburg and was getting bumped where she had early morning business meetings...

The captain happened to overhear and struck up a conversation... the condensed version is he invited her to fly in the cockpit as the flight was full and he did not want her to miss her flight.

When you are beautiful, young and sweet there always seems to be a knight in shining armour willing to help a damsel in distress...
