Is boiled linseed oil a useful rust preventative for seasonal implements stored outdoors?

To each his own I guess. I'm into ease of application myself. I use Aquaphor as a wound healing ointment instead of greasy Vaseline. It actually has additional healing stuff in it and reduces dry, flakey skin. So does Bag Balm but like Vaseline, it's greasy and messy plus it stinks...lol

I've found a little mentioned use for Fluid Film... Makes an excellent corrosion preventer for battery terminal connections and ground lug connections on equipment and much less expensive than the commercial red battery terminal corrosion preventer sold in AP stores.

Fluid film is a very good product that lasts a long time.

Used to walk around with a can of aerosol in my cargo pocket, ready to spray any bare metal exposed to the Mississippi climate. Bought it by the case.
Now I buy it in the gallon to spray my vehicles.

I apply vegetable oil to unpainted portions of my plow to prevent rust.

My dermatologist was very specific to say to use Aquaphor for skin wound care.

I just had my new-to-me 1997 Ford F250 sprayed underneath with Fluid Film. Nothing like it.

I sprayed commercial fertilizer spreaders and after 12 years look almost as good as new. That oil stays stuck and seemingly lasts forever.

I painted a motorcycle trailer that sat outside and was rusting with boiled linseed oil. It did eventually dry and stopped the rust. I used it straight, brushed on. I would think if it were cut 50-50 and sprayed on it would work and dry well enough.

Yes, linseed oil is excellent for both wood and metal. The boiled dries much faster.

In my experience, petroleum products just wash off. Plant oils oxidize and eventually form a hard coating. Motor oils and the like are specifically made to not oxidize. They will never harden.

Old paints were just linseed oil and pigment. Many modern paints still use linseed oil as a base.

I made the mistake of using soybean bar and chain oil in a electric pole saw that sat for about a year unused. The chain was completely glued to the bar and rigid from the oil drying and sealing everything together. Took over and hour scrubbing in kerosene with steel wool and wire brush to free everything up.

Linseed oil is a pretty good wood preservative, I painted a 25 foot wood ladder with it , worked well but it also attracts squirrels for awhile, they chewed on the ladder but luckily didn’t hurt it to badly.

If you mix it with paint thinner it will also go deeper into the wood.
