We use a 2022 3/4 ton Silverado at the shop pulling a 22' tag along. It tows very nicely with the 6.1 and provides plenty of power even with a 5 ton load.
It really didn't pay to get the diesel. First, couldn't find one and secondly, that engine came with a hefty premium.
Truck still averages 12 mpg pulling heavy.
I bought diesel pu's for years, now I'm back to gas engines and I'm just fine with them.

Nice to see that you are able to get into your woods and do some work with all the rain we've had. Sounds like you have gotten quite a bit done. (y) (y) You must have a well drained lot. Up here in the St J area we have more mud, wet soil, and water pooled up on the ground than we do during spring run-off with no chance for it to dry out with these continuous showers. Even the log yard I use is shut done from the flooding and extreme damage to his access road.

The hemlock lot is the highest point on my property so most of the trees are in dry areas but some of my skid roads are in lesser drained locations so they tend to be muddy but not so bad as to prevent hauling. With the pine market collapse, I am lucky to have access to the hemlocks as much of my pine is in wetter areas.

SR, you must have "lessen" your load somewhat , ,,
What it's really about is, the gas engines are just so much better than they use to be, and they have a lot more power and are MUCH better on fuel too, compared to old.

I still have a couple diesels, but I won't buying any more of them for many reasons.

I went the same way. Can’t make the numbers for a diesel pickup work. My work truck does less than 4000 miles a year. I average 12 mpg with gas. With diesel, I need to average 16 mpg to break even wrt $/mile. Hard to “pay off” the $6-8k premium for diesel.

We use our gas 3/4 ton just about every day towing on the average of 6000 lbs.
We struck a 36k deal for the truck. The diesel was 10k more at a time when trucks were sparse just after COVID.
The gas truck is much cheaper to maintain, has the power we need and gets great gas mileage for what it is.
By the time the diesel paid for itself, it’d be time for a new truck. We aren’t doing 100,000 miles in two years. More like 20.
It’s like those wind turbines that are all over the place. Th3y save a lot of petrol energy but when they cost half a million bucks to fix, you aren’t saving money.
Used to pay 11 cents per kWh. Now it’s 26 cents because we have 5 turbines in the ocean off the coast.

I'd have to agree with gas pickups going forward for me. The most I tow now is 12,000 lbs twice a year for 10 miles each time on mostly flat roads. If I did more towing, I'd go with a diesel, but gas engines can get a lot done these days, as much as diesels 15 years or so ago. And they will last 200K easily.

I'll keep my '06 Ram 3500 diesel dully . . . I only use it to tow, it has 130,000 miles on it, and it can TOW.

I have some long term soft spots, so I'm trying corduroy road.
