DJI Mini 4 Pro Drone questions

/ DJI Mini 4 Pro Drone questions #141
You are not ever permitted outside of your view, this means you can actually see the drone. Not that you can see the horizon and know that the drone is out there somewhere, you are required by federal law to have it in sight, able to actually see the machine. And people flying a mile away, 5 miles away and more are far, far beyond visual sight. You might be able to see it at a half mile, even that is doubtful. I know, screw the man and his rules. But the rules will keep adjusting upwards and software and hardware will be forced to get more intrusive as people continue to break the laws provided.
if your going to quote me and pretend to know the rules, please at least know them. VLOS is not required by the pilot, if you have VO's in radio communication that can see it, you have satisfied the FAA requirements for VLOS.

this is addressed in 14 CFR Part 107, Subpart B

specifically
107.31
107.33

The Mini 4 weighs 249 grams. I bet they put a lot of effort to get it under 250!!!!
249 grams or not, you can only fly in designated areas. The FAA has strict rules on drones now. They are considered an aircraft and must follow the rules for aircraft and you as a "pilot". Law enforcement now has the right to see your flying credentials on demand. Also, anyone with a phone can see your drone and identify its owner. Fair warning--Be legal or go to prison.

Yes, because what else does law enforcement have to do out in the sticks.

Never used RTH. Sometimes I’m flying before it gets updated. Also RTH isn’t going to avoid the trees to get back home.

When these drones return home, how precise is the landing spot. Can I fly one off my 14' x 20' elevated deck and have it land on the deck safely?

I've seen these drone "landing pads", do they help?:

View attachment 877054

I use a pad mainly because of the grass, after take off I give the drone a couple of seconds to update the home point, which it will tell it has, then it is off to the races. When it returns home if I let it self land it will usually be within a foot of where it took off from. If I do not give it those extra seconds to update at take off it will usually be within a couple of feet.

As I recall you can get permission to fly in restricted areas, I have never done it and have no need or at this time desire to but I do remember reading about. I am close enough to the local airport that I can cross into the edge of restricted air space and did by accident when I first got the drone but there is nothing but tree tops to see over that way so it is no problem to avoid.

Then you have not set it up correctly, obstacle avoidance works in all modes EXCEPT "Sport". The easiest way to avoid hitting something is to set the RTH in the settings so that AGL is above your highest objects around you.

RTH is a handy feature and it only takes literally seconds for it to update so you are not losing even a full minutes worth of flight time.

it will save your butt, mine went over a ridge once, and it went from full strength to nothing, in less then 1 second. 30 seconds later i was back in control.

So you think that these guys claiming that they are flying MILES away have people staged with radios every quarter mile to maintain visual? I would believe it, if they are 107 pilots with a crew, but your quotation of the law further strengthens my statement. These people are flying illegally and we all know it.

I don't assume anything. you quoted my 10.8 post. I had 4 people involved in that flight during a GIS mapping event. Your comments were wrong. I corrected them, regardless of what people are doing.

Has anyone used this DJI mini4 in a geofenced area? If so, how does it react. I live within 5 miles of a small airport and my brother was not able to get his DJI drone (not a mini4) off the ground.

Others have reported they can fly to up to 400' in a geofenced area but what DJI drone are they using?

I just finished flying my drone and I live I have said in this thread already about 4 miles driving from an airport 3 miles as the crow flies I would guess and I was just probably 300 feet up in the air taking pictures of my house.

It warns me and I have to check a box before I can fly that I am close to the municipal airport and then I will follow the rules

it should if you have the rth height programmed correctly.
Correct. I set my return to home at 100 feet because the trees around me are only about 60 feet tall maybe 80’ some of the taller ones.

I take off from my covered porch, fly out from under , then go up. I suspect RTH would land on my roof.

I'm struggling with getting the video from the Drone to the editor, and then getting it online.

I've been using ClipChamp to edit my videos from my phone, but it never stops buffering when I'm trying to view the drove video. The drone takes a mini SD card. I remove it, put it in an adapter and download it to my computer. That works good. It's fast and easy. Then I transfer it to my video editor, and it never stops buggering.

The video is shot at 1080

I downloaded CapCut and used that to edit this video. It said the my computer needed to be updated, so it did that. My computer is about a dozen years old, so that's probably part of my issue. Maybe all of it?

The video is choppy, and there are colors at the bottom of the screen.

Do I need a new computer? I've been happy with Dell, and will probably buy another if I have to. I just don't know what I need without buying a lot of extra that I don't need. Any suggestions?

open task manager when the video is playing if it shows 100% or close to it, then yes.

The rules also don't state it has to be by naked eye either.
Oh yes, they do. It clearly states, "with the unaided eye". The only exception is eyeglasses. This is from the CBO rules if you're flying under the exception (44809). It also states your "observer must be co-located"--Not a half mile away with a radio.

Drones can only fly under two areas of the law. You either have a pilot's license under Part 107 or you fly under the 44809 Exception for Limited Recreational flying AND have a TRUST Certificate. Either way, your drone must be registered and have the Remote ID activated if it leaves the ground.

The law may also save you from threats of someone shooting down your drone. The drone is now considered by the FAA as aircraft. Shooting it down carries the same recourse of law as shooting down a passenger jet.

I am impressed you have squeezed so much life and performance out of the computer you invested in more than a decade ago!!

If you shop for a new computer, you might consider one with a 4k screen display. To match up with the 4k capability of your drone. About 3 years ago I purchased an HP Envy all-in-one with integrated 4k screen. I love it. But it was also $2k plus.

It's funny (well not really funny) how these technology things creep along-- buy one thing, in this case a drone, but then have to go update another to keep up. šŸ˜€
