A little Rat Pack aside…

Joe the Italian butcher told his wife he was taking her to see the Rat Pack for their anniversary…. She had been asking to go so Joe thought perfect…

Anyway, he was not fast enough and shows sold out… and wife not happy!

He promised to make it up and said they would catch the show in Vegas…

What Joe didn’t know is Vegas also sold out… this was pre Internet…

Feeling really low and knowing he would have a most unhappy wife Joe sent a telegram to Dean Martin…

He said Mr Martin please help a Pisano out of the doghouse with his wife of 40 years.

Dean telegraphed back saying my pleasure… you are all set with date and time and dress well!

Joe the butcher and his wife arrived at the casino and dressed in a rented Tux checked in at the show booth… all his wife knew is they were going to the show… nothing about VIP and Dean

Oh, yes, Mr Martins special guests… right this way past security to the VIP booth where 2 dozen long stem roses and a bottle of Champaign and a hand written anniversary note from Dean were waiting.

During the show Dean dedicated a number to them…

Some people have class and it shows up unexpectedly at times…

Joe said his wife never forgot… and it became a cherished memory for them…

Yep, it was on cable as well. As I recall, a bit different programming at times, but other times mirrored the live TV station.

The Rat Pack was an informal group of entertainers, the second iteration of which ultimately made films and appeared together in Las Vegas casino venues. I just had a 6 volt light on my bicycle as a kid. I don't remember it dragging that much but do recall learning to reach back and disengage it when going downhill, or it would burn out the bulb.

I had two of those, at different times. The cheaper one as driven by the front wheel and the other from the back. Each had advantages and disadvantages.

Yeah, it's all relative. My step father said recently, "I thought I was old and rich, until I moved to Florida."

I've stopped seeing obits of classmates parents and teachers.
I'm seeing obits for classmates.
I put a small checkmark in my high school year book.
I'm starting to get some pages with multiple checkmarks.

I had one of those when I was a kid too. Given that pretty much anywhere I needed/wanted to go was uphill, any drag was too much, especially on the old beater 3-speed bike I had. Not many opportunities to go fast enough for it to get bright enough to be much use.

I now have to make a list before going to any store...then I misplace the list.

I hear ya. Or if I remember to bring the list, I left off the most important item, the one I didn't think I needed to write down because for sure I'd remember it.

I'm getting to the point where it's my classmates' obituaries I'm seeing...most of our parents are long gone.

A similar story here. My dad was born in 1896 and my mom in 1899. I have already outlived my 3 brothers and 2 sisters by more than 10 years.

You really know you are old when your kids start talking about signing up for Social Security.

I'm the baby from an old family. My father would have been 119 in two weeks. He was a great guy and well-respected man.
