Good Morning!!! (Actually afternoon). 70F @ 1:00PM. Partly cloudy. High 74F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph.
I tried to post earlier this morning, but TBN seemed to be having issues.
Another smooth trip home from Orcutt yesterday, with the usual quirks. The central leg of the trip parallels the San Francisco Bay, and it can get pretty windy with strong cross winds. Yesterday was pretty bad in that regard, and with both van and trailer being empty, the rig was moving around a fair amount, especially near the big semi trucks. That would cause the lane departure sensors to kick off the cruise control and activate the brakes on some of the wheels. Between the sudden deceleration and the angry bee buzzing of the brake controllers, it feels like the transmission or engine just exploded. Anyway, in one section it was happening so frequently I just turned off the cruise control. I did take a hit on MPG, dropping from 17 with the van alone to 13.5 loaded and towing. Gas prices varied from $4.49 near home to $4.99 at the Orcutt Costco.
The previous owners of the Orcutt home left a sizeable treasure of house paint, more than three dozen containers ranging in size from half pint samplers to full up five gallon buckets. I dug around on the net looking for a disposal site, and Waste Management was the hands down favorite. But when I went there Saturday, the gate was locked and a badly weathered note said they're not accepting hazardous waste due to personnel shortages. That's the same thing the WM site says up here, so I think it's just an excuse for not wanting to spend the money to deal with hazardous waste. Did some googling right there at the gate and found that local paint stores also accept old paint. so I hit a Sherwin-Williams store and got rid of almost all the stuff. The didn't want an empty can, nor did they want the wallpaper paste. I'm OK with that as I can deal with it later up here.
Other than that, it was a busy time unloading boxes and boxes of books, two more motorcycles, setting up some chairs and tables, and working in some dog walks.
With respect to getting a heavily loaded trailer up the hill, I've still got the 4WD F250, so that's one possibility. But if I shove a pair of firewood pallets into the ProMaster, there might well still be a traction issue. I could load it at the top of the hill the night before, or make a later departure doing it the first thing in the morning. I'd just like to keep it simple and not have to deal with it the same day as the trip itself.
I want to get a little time in this afternoon cleaning up the engine bay on the Vanagon, and maybe tracing some wires in preparation for another round of help from my buddy tomorrow. Not sure what else the day will bring...
