Good Morning!!!! 55F @ 5:30AM here in Orcutt, CA. Foggy this morning, then partly cloudy this afternoon. High around 70F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph.

Up pretty early yesterday, and on the road at about 5:30. Got up the driveway OK, but could feel the traction control cutting in, slowing the van enough with each engagement that if the hill would have lasted just a little longer, I wouldn't have made it up. I can try thinning out the gravel, or just plan on loading the trailer up at the cul-de-sac. I'm thinking more about future runs when I'll be moving palletized firewood, with each pallet weighing in at about half a ton. Probably twice the weight I was pulling yesterday. But once going, I didn't have any problems with trailer sway, or even stopping. The only time I really noticed anything was when I hit good sized bumps, and I could feel the trailer moving the back end of the van around, and hear the bars on the weight distributing hitch clunking. Got lucky on my arrival when a new neighbor out walking his dog volunteered to help me back the trailer into the driveway. He stopped me right on the verge of a jackknife that would have had the front of the trailer denting itself on the back door hinges. Thankfully the wheel chocks held the trailer in place when I unhitched it. Got most of it unloaded before my buddy came over and helped me with the last few heavier items. Now just have to get some bookcases moved into place and unpack the books and magazines in the right order. And start thinking about what I want to bring down in the next load.

There were two sheets of that Baltic birch in this load, Paul, purchased a few years ago to make cabinets for the old van. I think I got them for about fifty bux each, and I thought that was expensive at the time. Happy for you that you can pass along the materials cost increase to your customers. Everyone else seems to...

I'll get a list of the UI stuff together when I get back, David. Probably won't be until after I sell the old house that the equipment will actually be available, though, and who knows how much of it will last 'till then? The worst part of a failed UDMP is that it takes out the security gateway, security cameras, network management, and the network itself when it goes down. I very much prefer separating each of those functions so they're running on separate devices.

There's a lot to like about the simple technology and easy maintenance on that old pickup, Drew. My friend that's helping me with the van wiring harness took the body off a Ford Crown Vic and dropped on a 60s era pickup truck. So he's got A/C, power steering and brakes, but pre computer running gear on a big honkin' V8 for which he'll never have trouble finding parts. Kind of the best of both worlds. He's trying to sell it now, only looking for $10-12K. His next project is converting an older school bus into his new rolling home he and his wife will use as their retirement home. He's looking for an '80s era Ford F250 or F350 as the base vehicle, with all mechanical timing and fuel injection.
I have heard horror stories about how much it takes to cut a tree down $500 to $1500 per tree
Several years ago an acquaintance that lives in a redwood forest had one come down, almost taking out his garage. Cost him about $3K to get it cleaned up...

Thanks for sharing the photos of fall colors, guys. Doesn't look like I'm going to get up to the mountains to see any this year, and the trees down where I'm at don't change all at once like they do back east.

now for the fun stuff
twin one barrel Offenhauser carbs on an Offenhauser manifold. Flat head V8, not a lot of hp but sounded
nice. twin glass packs, very mellow
as soon as my brother pulled in he said forget the ride, it will be too rough on your neck. Ok...
so I took pics instead. No power brakes. No disc brakes. No power steering.
Hurst shifter, fuzzy dice tire valve caps
Older restoration, Ferrari red it seems, very pretty,

This thing will stick out like sore thumb locally. My nephew will need to be on his best behavior.
That pickup looks a lot like my neighbors 40’s Ford pickup. He built when he was in high school. It was ready when he got old enough to drive it. He claims it was built with lunch money. I think I posted this picture before. But here it is again.

Did you have your equalizer bars hooked up leaving your driveway?
When hooked up and leveling your vehicle and trailer they will unload your rear axle.
Or is your new van Front wheel drive? In which case they could help by loading the front axle.

Good morning.
50 and overcast, rain on its way. High in the upper 60’s today.

Yesterday was productive in speaker building. Baltic Birch was the same price as it was a couple weeks ago $100 for a 5x5 1/2” sheet.
Took a break after everything was clamped up to go to HD for a case of glue. It was 7.50 a tube, up from $4 a few years ago. Wife came along to look at cabinets for the new project, was disappointed with the lack of selection. I suggested that we make them.
Stopped at hydraulic shop on the way home and got a couple of hoses for the progressive mower. Put them on when I got home, but one was seized to a 45 adapter going into the cylinder. I got it apart, but threads were destroyed.

Off to the hydraulic shop for a new adapter right after a bowl of special k. Then back to the speakers. Not much else planned.
Paul, you have more talent in your pinky than I have overall, amazed at what you accomplish and create.
in the perfect post apocalyptic world where steam punk tractors make everything work,
I want to be stuck there with you, Kyle and a handful of others.
Strong engineering and electrical talent here. For sure Phil to build all our furniture.
and Sodamo has to be there since he has perfected living off grid.
Of course David is already exactly where he wants to be...
Don and I are driving the tractors.

hmmm steam tractors
guess I'll have to go back to my brief power plant steam turbine days and restudy enthalpy and entropy.
Enthalpy is the amount of internal energy contained in a compound
whereas entropy is the amount of intrinsic disorder within the compound
.
H= E + PV

Enthalpy equals internal energy plus pressure times volume and is a unit of measurement describing total heat available
more heat, more hp....and clearly we need more pressure for the formula to work
H
=enthalpy
E
=internal energy
P
=pressure
V
=volume
Steam punk tractor of the future maybe a little like running a fire truck pump?
not my genre
more enthalpy
avoid entropy
heat energy flows from hot to cold, 2nd law of thermodynamics
entropy can be explained by someone else, hard to put in common words

I really enjoyed visits to power plants. Those giant steam turbines were the largest machinery I've ever seen
Just a big heater making a turbine spin a generator
but it all starts with enthalpy.

unless you are a GE or Westinghouse combustion gas turbine, which I'm pretty sure are in every system for at least peaking,
they just want fuel and air

Good morning. Lows have been hovering around 40°, highs around 78°. No rain recently, but some is supposed to be coming next week.

Trees mainly just turning colors, really just the Aspens. Not too many other types of trees in the 'wild'. Our Siber Elms and the willows are barely starting.

Progress on the addition has been steady, but slow. The knee just limits my ability to do anything fast. It is what it is....

Everyone take care.

The stabilizer bars were hooked up, but the ProMaster van is front wheel drive. And I think that's part of the problem, as the trailer tends to unweight the front axle.

One solution to the traction problem would be to tow the van up the hill with the tractor. But it would have to be a one man job. Pretty sure I could safely rig a tow chain, but would the van follow the tractor around corners, or does someone have to be inside steering?

68°F and .14 inches much need rain

Off to Hilo town this morning. Breakfast with Sophie, Safeway, PO and back home.

Hopefully up on the roof and get my APs reset and adopted.

Then who knows.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

Good Afternoon Guys,
Ct, 52 to start going to 60, with on and off rain and a little bit of wind. Hopefully the wind does not get too strong !

Drew, I can only imagine what the turbines at Niagra Falls must look like ! We have visited the falls but never had a chance to see the giant turbines !

RNG, some one would need to steer it unless its a really straight drive, and even then you would have to tie the steering wheel straight unless it was a newer vehicle that had a steering lock !

Hope all ahve a blessed and safe day !

Steam turbines are impressive but not well suited for varying load traction type work. They require superheated dry steam as water droplets will cause awesome destruction upon blade impingement.

So go with piston drives and nice wet saturated steam.
Large enough bore and stroke yields lots of torque with low pressures.
