Back in the late 90's, buddy and I were black bear hunting. We knew 2 very large black bears were in the area. We put sleeping bags down on the side of the mountain, woke up the next morning and seen a scene below us that wasn't caused by a Blackie. Cow moose was half buried and found 2 buried calves.

Didn't hear a thing but dang I slept good with fresh air

I want one of those industrial bug zappers that can take out a sparrow or starling, so I can put it on the back side of my shed — the side toward the druggies, but away from our house— and just let it rip…

Good (Tuesday) morning. Overnight Low of -2.1C with associated frost. It's presently 15C, clear and calm.

Church/Parish Council meeting last evening went well and I've decided to 'step up' and nominate as a Warden. As is typical around the world, there are those who 'attend' and those who shoulder duties as needed.

Not much on for today... just enjoying the calm & sunny Winter weather. The only 'excitement' this week will be Friday @ 1100, which is our Vietnam Veteran's Day march/ceremony. Although I'm not a Veteran of that conflict (too young, I only joined the Navy in '75 @ age 17) but the Vet Centre requested me to be the Parade Commander.

That's about it, take care all.

66 outside this AM, upper 80's expected today. 69% humidity. Nice fog bank over the pastures this AM.

I took a closer look at the chimney yesterday on the Milk House. With a ladder. It's built pretty tough. Still in good shape as none of the bricks were loose. Cut into the concrete wall on the inside. Still don't see any support structures for it. It floats! LOL. If the weather cooperates and I hear from the roofer this week, looks like sledge hammer time on the roof.

Hope all have a great day. Be safe.
Rip, please remind me again why the chimney needs to come down? Is it structurally unsound? They give such character to buildings IMO.

Whatever you do, be careful.

Sad, hope the deputy survives and recovers as good as possible.

Good evening! The cold front came in!! The temp at 1:45pm went from 100˚ to 99˚ for 15 minutes before spiking up to 109˚. The real payoff will be the next two mornings when the temps will come close to 70˚.

Electric bill for July was $183 with every day over 100˚, 1413 kWh used

Water bill for no rain July was $66, 15kgal used. I thought they both would be more, pleasant surprise.
We don't get cooler morning temps until Wednesday morning predicted to be 71F for that day only. I'm going to get my jacket out.

Your bills are cheap! 3749 kwh about $383. With 3 kids, and a washing machine that runs continuously it seems, we used 12,200 gallons in July. $57.17 this does not include any sewer or garbage collection.

I been taking a backroad to work lately. Speed limits are slower, but it is about 6 miles less. It is aptly nicknamed the "hemorrhoid highway" due to the potholes/washboard conditions. It crosses the upstream headwaters of a fairly large lake. There is about a mile of bottomland on our county's side of the bridge, where there have been about 5-6 burros/donkeys. I guess they are living wild. Plenty of grass and water. They have crossed the road in front of me a couple of times, but most of the time they stay put. This morning, I had to swerve at 60mph to avoid an armadillo, went past a dog living in the wild (might be a brindle cousin version of whipper). Nearly hit some buzzards feeding on roadkill, I've had one crack a windshield before. Then, there are some people who live in 2 sheds that have decided to keep goats, but with fences designed for cows. Started out with about 3 goats, now up to about 10 or so. They were scattered on both sides of a 70mph highway. I saw them from a reasonable distance and slowed down, and yep, about 5 of them darted in front of me. I honked the whole way past them. Kind of thinking about mounting my hay spear on the front of the car, for some skewered cabrito shish kabob. I guess my main recourse is to keep calling the sheriff on them to get them hopefully fined for the hazard they pose.

Thomas, glad I don't have bears. They don't seem to make good neighbors.

Billy, sorry about the cramps, I get charlie horses too every now and then. Love mustard vehicle food in the form of sausage.

Ron, beautiful pics. Thank you.

RNG, build you a comfy swimming pool, have a standby gas powered pump full of avgas, ready to throw the pickup hose in the pool, and build your sprinkler system like you did on your old home. Adjust it to consume your whole pool in the time it would take to hopefully save it. Then, enjoy the pool year round. Go swimming when they cut off the electricity. Didn't mean that as a crude remark, just a good time to go swimming since no internet etc... I hope you enjoy your new home. It looks like Lompoc has mostly tile roofs.

Prayers for our team, Hope your toe gets better Bupps, and Popgadget gets his wiring/damaged components fixed. My friend showed me a computer motherboard that suffered when his home was hit by lightning. No surge protector would have saved it. It had a 1" wide blackened path across it.

What does the Warden do? And yes, church's need volunteers. My wife and I currently host Wednesday night youth nights. I am foregoing another term of Sunday school teacher, for many reasons. Enjoy being the parade Commander! Someday, you'll have to give us some stock tips, since you're a day ahead of us in time. :)

Power went out about 10 minutes ago. No storms here yet, no wind at all.
Our power (up in Alexandria, Va) went out at about 1600. Now I've a portable generator here and nothing expensive in the fridge/freezer so my wife and I just chilled. About 1930 my eldest son, who lives 3 miles away, called and as I went to answer the phone the power came back on. He was calling to offer to bring one of his generators over. I told him "thanks for turning the power on".
