I don’t have a CDL so I can’t pull an 18k gvwr trailer behind my 10k truck without needing a class A. The Ram would pull it no problem but the TN DOT wouldn’t like it.

I am in the process of buying a 16k dump trailer for hauling gravel, dirt and maybe a small tank loader.

Most trailers with 8k axles will be rated for 17-18k, however if you order it, you can have them derated to 16k. Most, not all manufactures, add pin weight to the gvw. I did that on my FMAX208, D/C 102"x28'.

I ordered a PJ 22k dump and asked to have it derated. They forgot, and since I hired it delivered the trucker didn't know about it. They would have sent me another GVW sticker, but I said the heck with it and tow it anyway :)

The trailer I’m thinking of getting from Kaufman will be a derated 17k.

IMO, it all depends on what you’ll be hauling on it and over what type of ground. However, I would still upgrade to 8K’s even if it’s de rated. It’ll last “forever” as a 16-17K with 8K axles.
What are their build times now? Last time we talked it as 9-10 weeks.

Yes, I’ll get the 8k axles. I’m not sure what the lead times are.

I’m having my excavator delivered and have several months' worth of projects lined up on my place before needing to haul her anywhere. I just want to have a thorough understanding of what's available and want to make sure I get value for money when I make my purchase. Being an old guy has taught me the value of planning well in advance.

It sure does. Look at the length and width you’ll need very carefully.
I just bought a cheapie 7K trailer and it’s fine, but it’s a bit narrow for our mowers. In the fine print on Retcos website it says “Optional-6 inch extra width”. Boy I wish I had seen that. Kaufman has all sorts of options. If there’s something you don’t see, you can ask. I have asked them for other options. Sometimes they say yes, sometimes no.

I ordered a Kaufman 24' 17k tilt deck gooseneck and had them derate it to 12k to stay under CDL requirements. The trailer is *almost* perfect....I wish they had an option to make it full width from the neck to the fenders so I could load pallets easier.

How much weight can you put on it before going over 12k?

Thanks very much. Please explain your having it de-rated to 12k instead of 16k or 10k.

Do you have a one ton dually with 14k gvwr?

I use a 20’ sure track aluminum trailer to pull my 11600# excavator. 14k with 12055# payload. Only thing out there to keep me in the black. Pulls great.
