We eat lunch midday, supper in the evening, unless we go out for dinner in the evening.

I think that is a Western thing. I hear it less here in Texas than I did growing up in South Dakota.In the south (as far west as TX)..."dinner" is a mid day meal...supper is an evening meal...

Actually a Diner is a restaurant. We always ate dinner around noon and supper whenever we were done with the farmwork.Diner and supper get's confusing between households.
Diner is at mid day, and sometimes carried in a diner pail.
Supper is the evening meal. Often times soup to sup.
Both are often stirred in a pot ;-)
