I've read of states where it's against the law to leave the hitch in for the reason you mention. Yet my drop only sticks out 7 1/4 inches beyond the bumper... if you bang your shins on that you pretty much are leaning against my truck. My peeve in parking lots is how people need to "arm" their locks. The first few times that happened as I was walking past I almost jumped on the hood, thinking they were about to run me over. Funny thing, I can lock mine without sounding the horn; yet the alarm will still go off if somebody tries to open the door. I know, that's how I found out that I have an alarm.

The DIC was broken on my 2003 Suburban when we bought it. (Driver Information Center, but it's more fun to day DIC). Therefore, I cannot turn off the horn alert when locking or unlocking the doors. So:
BEEP! - lock
BEEP! BEEP! - unlock

Thought of this thread last night...

Come out from the grocery store, guy drives right up, parks, smoking a cigarette, and the "lady" gets out to go in the store. Please note, right in front of the no parking sign fire lane sign. I'd say something to him, but I was carrying LOL

Under-seat wells under back seat, with well lids latched down, and seat folded down on top of that. So no danger in a front-ender, but I have spent some time wondering how they'll hold in a rollover. My wife has rolled two vehicles, one at 70 mph, so yeah... stuff happens.

I rolled a vehicle with a small bottle jack on the back seat floor. Put a sharp point in the roof so I too wonder about stowage for multiple hitches inside an SUV along with recovery straps, chains and other lovely wintertime apparel.
In a hard case repurposed medical instrument box now.
Unsecured of course.

When I have items such as a crowbar or ice chisel I try to lay it crossways in the truck. That way rather than going through the cab in the event of an accident it will whack somebody else.
I've been in two accidents in my life. The first was when I cleaned out a guardrail, the only injury I recieved was when my fish pole came out of the rear window gun rack and hit me in the head on the way out the window. The second was when I rolled a van... my shotgun hit me in the head as it went out the window. (I also ended up with a compressed spine and a few other injuries.) Am I the only one who sees a pattern?

Yeah I know the risk of all the heavy stuff in the back seat floor of my extended cab PU, but I'm hoping it will make for a quick, clean kill
