What gave 60's Greyhounds their distinctive smell

In my younger days Greyhound bus exhaust didn't smell like the exhaust from any other diesel I knew of. What caused it?

The Detroit 2 stroke were in a lot of city busses so I imagine that they made it into the greyhound line.
Their known more for their sound.

Thanks Rusty. I suspected they were Screamin' Jimmys but couldn't find any documentation. I haven't smelled one in decades.

Thanks for that video. Brought back child hood memories when we use to get behind the city transit busses. Not only the smell, but they would roll coal (as it's called today) too !
If your parents were lucky enough to get behind one, you got smoked out !

Maybe they drained the toilet into the HOT exhaust?

Never been on a Greyhound, but you could blindfold me and stick me into an old VW Beetle, and I could tell you where I was from the smell alone. I haven't been in a vintage Beetle in probably close to 40 years, my mom sold hers in the late 1970's, and only a few friends had them in high school. But I can still smell that wax in my mind, that they used to rustproof them with.
