In much of Vermont, it's a combination of wind and the thin, bony soils in a lot of places. Often, you can walk into a stand and know it's subject to blow-down by the pit and mound topology - remnants of old rootballs from blown over trees.You must get a lot more wind than I do I hardly ever get any blowdowns.
