I have memories of a rabid/mad as heck groundhog charging me when I was 15 on the farm growing up, big fat groundhog living under the driveway culvert and I was coming to ruin his day.
So he went for me first. Single shot 20 gauge. It was a good shot...though I was quick to reload.
I used that shotgun on a rabid red fox also, biting its tail and running around in circles, right in the middle of Aquetong Road, right in front of our farm driveway.
In my late 20's as a young volunteer fireman I fired the chief of police's .45 up at a Pocono area cabin. Quite the hand cannon, big flame.
My first wife gave me a really nice 5 shot .22LR with a scope. I loved to target practice with that. Grew up with an old .22LR single shot on the farm.
Though I had to take a 16 gauge automatic on the boat, before we left for Florida, given to me by my wife's father who wanted me to protect her
against the Bahamian drug gangs he was sure were going to attack us. Sigh. So the shotgun went under the master bedroom bed, never to be used.
I'm told the sound of that gun being racked is so distinctive a lot of the bad guys will wander off.
I have considered a non lethal alternative. Tasers are sometimes illegal.
We don't have the stun gun we've read about in science fiction for 50 years,
so it would appear bean bags or rubber bullets are one road to go down.
I would need to donate an AED unit for church before having this discussion there.
30 degrees. Brrrrr. Not here thank you. That would do in my peppers for sure.
