I've been using these inexpensive tablets for years and directions are hard for me to find. If anyone would like to share tips and tricks on these tablets please PM me and we can do it off group.

My wife is an avid reader and uses a Kindle Paperwhite. I have a Kindle Fire 10 HD, but all I use it for is streaming video. I also have a Samsung tablet, but the Kindle Fire is a much better video platform. I added a 64 gb. SDXC card and download hours of entertainment for those duck hunting trips in the middle of nowhere.

Bought a Fire 10HD about 6 months back.
First thing you want to do is blow off all the Amazon crap, thing works like a top now. I used Fire Toolbox ( [WINDOWS][TOOL]Fire Toolbox V28.9 ) Battery lasts forever, great video quality and getting rid of Amazon garbage allows you to use Google Play store to load whatever app you want, not the apps that Amazon wants. For the price you can't beat it IMHO.
I even used that program on my grandaughters old 7" fire tablet, the transformation was unreal, battery life being the main one.
Actually, it doesn't remove the crap software, apparently it's coded right into the OS. It disables it so it doesn't load.....Mike

I'm on my 3rd Kindle Fire 10" tablet. With each successive Generation, it appears that the font gets smaller or you just can't enlarge it enough.

I spend way to much time on it but love the kindle for reading, web surfing, eMail and Forum browsing. All of them have been trouble free.

I have a bluetooth keyboard for the times I use the Kindle Fire on social media. Screen keyboards are too much like the old non-tactile membrane keyboards of the early computer years. The touch screen makes a reasonable mouse substitute, but I don't type more than a sentence without a real keyboard.

If you just want to read a book, there is nothing better than a Paperwhite, not even a real book. You can read it in the dark, in bright sunlight, or anything in between, the battery lasts weeks between recharges, and you can carry a whole library in your hand. Fonts are adjustable to match your vision. My wife finally wrecked her old Paperwhite, and the new one has an even sharper screen, plus Bluetooth so it will play audio books. Amazon offers a discount on Kindle versions of books so you can follow the text and audio at the same time if you like. There's a lot to be said for a device that does one thing better than anybody else.

I'll follow this for tips because I purchased a Fire and set it up at a store to test it when they place their orders twice a week. I was able to unload some apps on setup but junk keeps popping up every time they turn it on. Is there a way to eliminate those game pop ups?

I am typing this on my Fire HDX 8" (iirc). 7th Fire we have owned. The OS is a version of Android, but proprietary to Amazon. Some apps work fine, others, not so much. When this one breaks, I will probably spend the money on a larger Samsung tablet. My eyes are not getting any younger.

So go on that site and download the correct version and launch ?
Yup, the latest version which is currently V28.9. There's lots of videos on youtube on the procedure, this one is an old one but is one of the easier ones to follow

I didn't think there'd be enough Fire tablet users too get so many responses. If enough users keep putting up what you're good at we'll know who to ask when we get into a pickle.

My current project is getting used to a wireless keyboard and mouse.

If you shop specials on Amazon, the Kindle Fire is the cheapest high quality android tablet on the market. I think I paid something like $129 for the Fire 10 HD 32 gb. with cover and plugged in a 64 gb. card for extra storage. There will be holiday specials coming up this fall. It's not surprising they have sold a lot of them.

I wouldn't personally run a 3rd party OS overlay. You have no idea what they are really doing. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You can buy a Fire without ads, but it costs more.

THE MESSAGE BELOW IS NOT A QUOTE FROM TORVY, IT'S A QUESTION TO TORVY FROM STUCKMOTOR.

If you've found an add on or a way to remove all of or even most of the ads please give me a link. I don't recall seeing a no ad option when browsing for Fire tablets on Amazon.com. and would appreciate you pointing that out to me as well.

My message above illustrates one of the infurating problems I have with my Fire 8 tablet. I attempted to delete and edit some of my message only to delete part of Torvy's quoted text as well. I couldn't delete and start over on the tablet because I haven't been able to find "delete message" on this forum in days. I found my cursor in the quote box and typed there. After sending the message my tablet had changed my salutation "Torvy" to "Torvy said".
I'm on my smart phone now and on the phone it reads simply "Torvy".
End of explanation/rant and I feel better now,
Stuck

Torvy,
Thanks!
Before I started having all of that trouble with my tablet, my message included basically the following that I didn't retype because my nerves were shot.

Several years ago, I installed an add-on that cost approximately $15.00 and couldn't tell much difference. I think it was the same as the one that can be bought with the tablet . Aren't lock screen ads the ones that go away when I put in my unlock screen password? They don't bother me much anyway? (Please correct me if I'm wrong about what they are.)
It's the pop-up ads that drive me crazy and as best I can remember, I still had plenty of them.
