James Webb Space Telescope begins historic mission

This is a little off topic but I can not resist posting this. My wife works for a local TV station and knew I would appreciate this because of my amateur radio days.

This story is of an 8 year old girl that made contact with the space station. So fun to see young people enjoying HAM radio! Space exploration is huge for this young lady!

To me, all this search for SETI with no finding of such, just proves how special and wonderful our planet really is.
Yes, Earth is a very special place for all of the life it supports.

I tried the protein folding one....... on an 8 core Xeon Work Station with 14 Gigs of RAM. I think I had the resource allocation set pretty low, but it just took over like a stress test and took 10 minutes to see the CTR/ALT/DELETE interrupt. :)

Good to see you posting Richard. ... about something of interest to you. Seems like the longer we're on TBN, the less we post. But I still read many threads just out of curiosity.
Cheers,
Mike
Hi Mike,

I've been out of touch with you as well. Hope your garden was productive this year!!! We had some short periods of serious drought up here but generally it's been good. I think you are a bit drier. Hope all is well with you my friend. I think of you often.

I'd really enjoy having a conversation with you about our universe and your thoughts on it all. :)

The space telescopes are great and they get a lot of publicity...but...IMO what is just as amazing as the expanse of the universe is the world (other universe) that is not so easy to see or photograph and that is the subatomic world...who knows what it might actually looks like?...It's likely a lot busier world than we think...!

Just on a related note...many have at least heard of "The String Theory"...there is an adage that tries to explain (in layman's terms) just how big a single "string" is...
It goes something like this:...IF you took a single atom and blew it up to the size of the known universe...a single string would be about the size of a tree on the planet Earth...! (remember, you are starting with a single atom)
A much better explanation than my "Pitri Dish" description.

To me, all this search for SETI with no finding of such, just proves how special and wonderful our planet really is. That doesn't mean that we should abandon SETI. Probably a lot of good things (technological) have come to mankind from such research...and it keeps a lot of high tech guys off the street. ;)
I agree. And I firmly believe our lives today are much improved by our research into space travel.

Or it proves we're the worst of the worst and were cast out as far as possible from everything else beyond range of any hope of contact ever again.
You shouldn't think so little of yourself. Afterall, we tolerate you.

Jupiter as seen by the Webb telescope (I couldn't post the media) Can someone get these photos and post them?

I do not believe in THE Big Bang, as in a singular event. Rather what some consider as so, is simply one of many that have occurred and re-occurred. All that stuff gets blasted out, scatters, re-collects at other places, recompresses and it starts again. WE do not know how many, how far back, or where. WE have no sense of those concepts beyond what WE have observed. I do NOT believe in a single beginning or end of 'time' or 'space'. I believe it 'just is' and that we will never be able to comprehend it on any real basis.

The sum total of what WE think we know would not fill a small portion of the pointy end of a microscopic pin stuck in the wall of the great library of the universe.

And since we all know that religion is not a topic for the main boards, are some of you asking for this thread to be moved to the Front Porch?
