And those vent windows worked really well too! Had some problems with the AC in the truck and I was wishing for a vent window.......
I liked the floor vents cars had before A/C was standard. Open a vent and crack a rear window, perfect for highway driving.

50 years ago, you could just jump on your motorcycle and go. Not helmet or any thing. 50 years ago you didn't have to pay for an annual infection species tax on your boat. Didn't have to wear seat belts in the car, You could drive to any Oregon Beach and it was free. Didn't even need an ORV permit to run the dunes or in the common Forest Woods. All changed now, as everyone wants a cut, and they want a beach access fee money and ORV money. You can't smoke a cigarette on an Oregon beach or have your dog off leash. Can't have a campfire, or stay over night in all the interesting areas that use to be free to over night with a camp fire.
50 years ago most states required motorcycle helmets, it wasn't until the mid-late 70s that some states repealed those laws. My state still doesn't require seatbelts if you're over 18. IMHO, you're stupid if you don't use both.

As far as the rest of the stuff you mentioned, most of it got restricted because a few ruined it for everyone else...ATV riders who'd tear up the terrain, irresponsible dog owners who'd let it run free and harass wildlife, crap everywhere, etc., "wilderness" campers who'd leave all their trash behind (and maybe a smoldering campfire), boaters who'd transfer invasive species because they were too lazy to wash off their boat. The list goes on. If people had been more respectful maybe a lot of these restrictions wouldn't have needed to be imposed.

I remember when the first girl in our class got pregnant, must have been the summer before 9th grade. I never saw her again.

Only one I knew of in school was my Sr year HS..she was suddenly gone. The county school superintendents daughter.

I wonder if in the next few years, people will be required to have home owner's insurance, with exculsions for wild fires and such. I mean you have to have it on your car and motorcycle all ready in my State. And they have lobbyists that work day and night, to get legislation in. Right now the insurance companies are just dropping policies left and right for owners: Meaning that they get no money. Right now they are selective of the areas, but at some point, they will want to recoup their losses here, and spread the loss out to include everyone, with some sort of law. I don't insure my boat, yet in some areas, this also became a requirement for attending a meeting.

I remember around 1980 or 1981 when I was stationed in Albuquerque, there was a mayoral election and one woman running had plans to install seat belts on motorcycles.

She lost.

Sometimes I wonder how many people are killed while trying to fasten their seatbelts while driving, or trying to reach into their pocketswith the seatbelt restricting access

They inflate in less than 10ms, and can provide additional neck support as well as chest and abdominal protection. Of course, it helps to wear a helmet as well...

All the best,

Peter

Laws are only needed because of the failure of personal responsibility. Remember when it was as easy to buy dynamite as it was to buy a shovel?
