Ya you just need to drive that semi like your driving a sail boat, tack in and out of the wind. Says the non-sailor/non-truck driver.
Maybe, but isn't tacking a sale boat to CATCH the wind? Not sure there's enough lane on a road for tacking :)

Just wondering - would jamming on the trailer brakes bring that empty trailer around to an angle with the truck, and avoid flopping over as they went off into the median? Seems like that might be less damage.
I don't think you'd be bringing the trailer around to any angle, but I have often wondered if a tap of the trailer brake might change forces enough to sit the trailer back down a little. Then again, if you're "over the center point" it might help to put you over on your side.
A lot of physics involved that I hope I never have to test or prove.

Tacking in a sailboat is going into the wind. You can sail no closer than a 45 degree angle into the wind. So if you are heading for a place directly into the wind you have to zig zag back and forth or “tack”.

Same thing here. Took a lower bridge over part of lake Ontario. High profile warning so taller bridge was closed (you'd have time to call 911 yourself if you went off that bridge).
I stopped at the lower bridge to check it out because they had just dragged a blown-over semi off that one on it's side because they couldn't stand it up. Police started letting trucks over, so I went too. Loaded, no problem.
Took the same way back after delivery. Empty. Gust from behind at an angle and trailer wheels on one side lifted probably a foot. Floored it to get down the rest of the bridge.
Un-nerving is how I would describe it.
I was on the "short side" of the wind too meaning if it flipped me I would have to rely on the guard rail to keep me out of the water.

Was that the Burlington Skyway bridge on the QEW ? It's insanely too high for that windy area.

And the other bridges seem high too.

Even driving a 15-passenger van over those bridges is white knuckles. So, in the GPS, I found other routes. The RED route was the dangerly high bridge. The orange was the lower bridge.

Looks like the dump box is wedged under the I-beam like a support pillar

Then they wonder why I don't like Mondays.
Chances are that the driver is still in the cab, unless he can fly like Superman.

Good call, because the guys standing in the background also have a lift machine. ;)
