Is Rural Living a Hobby?

I miss the crime, the trouble makers, the rude drivers, the self-centered shoppers, the noisy neighbors, the perps looking in my back yard, the need to lock my doors, the HOA letters about a weed in my driveway, the warnings from the city water department about a boil water advisory, and the 30 minute response time from a police call.

But, I do like peeing in my driveway and asking a stranger at my door "What do you want ?". My allowed dogs all agree with me...
Good stuff.

I am 1/2 a mile down a dirt road...so anyone at my door is criminal trespassing and destroying property as they broke through my gate. My German Shepherd is 85 lbs and has full run of our place... We don't get many visitors, and we love it.

I guess it is both to me. I enjoy it everyday. I also enjoy Astronomy, Photography, Amateur Radio..but only when the work is done.
One thing I noticed the other day when we were in Stillwater, OK was that even in the city you could still see the stars quite well. Just on the outskirts of town, we could see the milky way. Haven't been able to see the milky way here for decades due to light pollution. Even 5 miles out of town it can get difficult. We can see the lights of Chicago and that's about 100 miles away.

Freud said a man needs 2 things, mark twain said essentially the same thing

love and work

he was referring to males, not **** sapiens in general.

i've always said, it takes passion to have a real hobby.

how many women you know have a real hobby?

once in a while........my mom was a golf addict
my wife has scrap booking and quilting. not only are they serious hobbies...there addictions.

If nobody wanted to live in the cities, and everyone wanted the rural lifestyle, then our rural life style would probably be ruined. Lets be glad that some (make that most) people like to live in the city.
it already is. all of calif is moving to north idaho. there building like nobody's business. and they all want mcmansions. i am getting real sick of it. they have ruined my small town of the past 28 years.

Yep... flood gates opened here for Idaho after the 1991Oakland Fire Storm when 3000+ homes burned.

More recently... 3 from my street in the last 18 months sold and moved to Idaho... last week is to Colorado...

A lot of those I know are retired Law Enforcement....makes me think Idaho must be very low crime.

Same happens here in NW MT, all the big $$$ have moved in, forcing people in service and blue collar job that hadn't bought a house/property yet to be forced out of their rentals in benefit of VRBO's.

Has anyone used this book to transition from Hobby to Income Producing Land? And did it work?

@Oaktree Personally, I would be open to the thought that I thought have been level or square in 1820.
Nah, this isn't settling, it was built crooked. Doors/windows aren't even square to the walls/ceiling. Actually the doors and windows are reasonably level & plumb. Walls and floors, not so much.
