You learn fast if you have to walk a mile back home in cold weather, especially if you were lightly dressed.
LOL, I only ran out of fuel once, but then I'm a fast learner.

Pro's have good rules! Fuel every day and grease every 8 hours.

I've yet to run a tractor out of fuel. OTOH I did park the tractor on the driveway on Sunday afternoon to change the fuel filter. Got the new one in and it fired right up... and then cut out as the air got to the injectors. I'd forgotten to bleed the filter assembly. Idiot. Momentary panic as I realized I needed to move the tractor so we could drive to work on Monday. I ended up cracking the injector lines to bleed them, which worked.

If you don't have a gauge a stick is a simple way to check the fuel level. Like my pickup I also try not to let mine get below 1/2, especially the way that fuel prices are rising now.

The less fuel you leave in your tank = the more condensation area and the more water you collect in your tank.

I've only run out of fuel once, ever. It was when I was a kid driving an old 1970's IH tractor. I was about 13 years old, doing some field work about a 1 1/2 miles from the house/shop/fueling area on the farm. The tractors fuel gauge didn't work, but it was easy enough to simply stand up, take the fuel cap off (tank was right behind the steering wheel (or in front, if you want to look at it that way)), and look in. I saw that I needed fuel, it was getting low, and it was about lunch time anyway.

So, I folded up my implement and made the road move to the house. I pulled in the drive and thought I'd just run in, grab a bite really quick, come back out, fuel the tractor, and drive back out to the field. Well, I pulled in the drive, idled the tractor, ran inside, bathroom break, make a sandwich, park my butt in front of the TV, eat, finish TV show, run back out to the idling tractor, and drove back to the field....

About half way there, I realized I forgot something... the friggen FUEL! And just then, the engine started looping, and idling down. I pulled off the road and shut off the engine as quickly as I could. Now, I'm in trouble. I start walking back home, and got picked up by my grandpa. Told him what I had done, who scolded me. We got a can of fuel and some tools. It took us... well, him, about 30 minutes to bleed the lines and get it running again. All the while, he was scolding me. I did help, where and how I could, but it was his show.

I never let that tractor, or any other tractor, get that low on fuel again.

Thats not to say that break downs dont happen. I've ripped fuel lines, bad pumps, etc. But I've never again let it run out of fuel.
Ran out of gas in an old Allis B cutting wood one time - just careless on my part. It used so little fuel we never really worried about it. I dumped the pre-mix fuel from the chain saw can in the tank and made it home OK, a bit smoky, but got there fine.

The pre-mix was like a poor man's Motor Medic!

I fall into the fill it up every time I'm done. I ALWAYS want to start with a full tank. Avoids (minimizes) the condensation issue but just as important to me....

it's a 42 gallon tank and I keep about 45 gallons (5-gallon buckets) on hand. I keep tractor and backhoe full, keep my reserves full so I can do a full day/weekend of work and top off when done, then refill the tanks.

If I run out of fuel, then I fill tractor which empties my buckets (presuming they're full) and now, when I'm done, I might be empty in my tank (or low) AND nothing to fill it which means I have to drive to town, fill my 45 gallons, bring them home, fill tractor, GO BACK to fill them up.

Way too much work for me! I like to fill them on my terms, not on a 'needs' basis.

Since I'm new to diesel, having bought my first diesel anything only a few months ago, I have been trying to learn as much as I can about these engines. And since this whole running out of fuel or changing the filter and bleeding the air out is new to me I'm gonna change the fuel filter as soon as I know I have a couple weeks where I for sure know I won't need a tractor. I figger this will be good practice for when some dope runs my tractor dry.

All tractors are different. Read up on the procedure for your specific tractor. Then leave yourself time to scratch your head if it doesn't play nice.

I tend to fill the tank as the engine warms up before working, but maybe I should start topping it off after parking. With a small tractor with a small tank it's not as big a deal as it is with those big tanks. My tank is only 6 gals so my 5 gal can tops it off easily.

One good practice I've employed is I put the Service Power in as soon as I empty the can. And put the empty can in the Jeep so it's there to fill next time I go out. Not good to be sitting with two empty cans.

I have not run it dry...yet.

But I did get it stuck in the edge of a small pond. And it was evening and my Jeep was broken. So I walked home and got the neighbor to pull it out the next day.
