Do homeowners buy snowplows to plow their own properties?

We must get more than you do in N Florida. Must remove it here, to much to leave.

I bought an old F-350 diesel with a plow for 6K. I plow my drive, my in-laws and my neighbor across the highway. $6K for 15 years of plowing figures out to be very inexpensive. If you have the need, do it.

If I may summarize the best of all the advice you've been given: examine your options (new, old beater, tractor--if you have one); your need (snowfall, getting to work, access to EMS and other emergency service); and your desire (do you want to have to mess with it and do you have the time?). Once you lay that out, see what's out there and make your choice. Remember that prices will go up as we approach winter

There is another option…..you could move to another part of the country, and put this entire issue behind you….you could not pay me, and give me a free house, to live in a place where it snows that much, and is that cold for that long…..

But we have no AC in our home. We ski all winter. God bless the white stuff. Last year we were 100" short of average here.

We moved to the lake Superior snow belt some 20+ years ago. Getting some form of a snow removal system is easy. Having fun in ii is when the fun really starts. You couldn't pay us to move were AC is the norm.

When our half mile driveway wasn't paved, I used a rear blade on my John Deere 2030. The problems with that set up is that you are always looking behind you and it tends to scrape off a layer of dirt and gravel. The blade also releases snow in piles along the side of the road and it takes a long time for the piles to melt. Once the driveway was paved, I have used the bucket on my JD 5525 to plow snow. Advantages over the blade are that you are always looking forward and you can dump the snow where you want, away from the driveway. I don't see any advantages to putting a plow on a truck unless you are having to drive somewhere else to plow. If only for home use, what else are you going to use that plow for? If you already have a tractor, a bucket or blade makes more sense because the implements have other uses.

I have a mile long gravel driveway. If I have to plow snow BEFORE the drive is rock hard - reverse the blade and plow. The gravel stays where it should be. My rear blade has many uses beyond snow plowing. But - if I really want to get out my driveway - I have to plow the snow with something.
