Growing up the only time the house was heated was around the holidays when grandparents and great aunt's came to visit...
Dad always worked outside and would say home heating was throwing money out the window... extra blankets in the closet if needed.
Oakland CA has near ideal weather based on the number of heating and cooling days annually.
Funny thing on my time in Austria in winter... my hosts would often turn up the heat so the Californian wouldn't be cold... the warmest winter in my life was that winter in the Alps...
