And you cant use your grandfather's license, you'll have to get retested again, I have a free wheelbarrow coarse to get retrained in wheelbarrow steering just bring your own wheelbarrow....

The only wheelbarrow that I use now is attached to my loader arms. I do still have the wooden wheelbarrow he made for me though, we used them alot for wheeling plants around between the greenhouses.

Got some tractor and wood pics today.

We had a 22" Red Maple die during the drought late this summer. It wasn't very far in off the road and had a pretty good lean back towards the road and power line. I figured it would be best to cut it while the wood was still sound and before it caused any trouble. I put a snatch block in the woods and used the winch to pull the tree over away from the road and against the lean. You can just barely see the orange snatch block on that White Birch it straddled when it came down. I set the choker up as high as I could reach from the top step of an 8' step ladder. Since the tree was dead I made the back cut good and high so there would be plenty to lever against when the hinge broke early.

Winched it out into into a 3 log hitch.

Moved the tractor up and winched the hitch around in a big turn to get it headed right.

Skidded it home down the road about a 1/4 mile. Once the butts were lifted it didn't tear up the road.

Added it to the firewood pile.

Nice job...I dream of a tractor that size...

Why do you skid out of the pulley instead of setting your chains in the which plate cracks ?

Interesting video. The two biggest things I took away from it was that I'm going to continue sharpening at every fillup; and based on his prices, I'm paying way too much for my Oregon chains.

The two biggest things I took away was Stihl chains are better and avoid cutting sand........

Nice seeing a load on that tractor for once:thumbsup: Is red maple any good for farwood and whens the chains going on?

Good question - Couple reasons. 1) It is easier. Especially at the landing. Just drop the hitch and pull forward a little with some cable slack and unhook the chokers. Then winch the cable back in and you are ready to go again and the chokers are still in the sliders. 2) If you have a winch with a lower pulley and you put the cable in the lower pulley when you are ready to skid out it keeps the pulling point weight of the logs low just the same as if they were in the slotted bar. 3) In the woods if you have to drop the hitch, drive over a rough or very steep spot, and then winch the hitch back in you don't have to mess with taking the chokers out of the slots and put them on the sliders to winch and then put them back in the slots again. Even with my small winch with no lower pulley I leave the hitch on the cable if the going is good and the hitch not to big, Those are the main reasons anyway.

It's about as good as white birch, but doesn't look as pretty in the wood pile.

Like jstpssng says about the same as WB. I have a lot of both in my firewood. I was going to put the chains on today but then figured since I'm going to skid down the road I might as well do that first. The chains are next on the list.

I didn't need the video to tell me not to cut dirt, but it happens anyways. Everytime I see the sparks flying I think OH-
Well, you can probably guess.

Why do you skid out of the pulley instead of setting your chains in the which plate cracks ?

I been thinking about what I said -using the top pulley skidding with my small L3010 and 290 winch. It is something that you should NOT take casually. They say to use the slotted bar in the manual for a reason. You can get in trouble quickly pulling from the top and it takes a good amount of experience to judge when it might be OK. The biggest danger occurs if you have to make a sharp turn and it is especially dangerous if the tight turn is during or at the top of an uphill pull. What happens is when you make the turn the cable is at a right angle to the tractor. So the force tries to pull the tractor over sideways - which is easy to do from the top pulley. And even easier when the tractor is on a side hill. Also if the hitch catches the front end can come up. Most people are aware of that one but the sharp turn or side hill turn is more of a danger.

So you should not just go out and stop using the slotted bar because it is easier to tend the chokers. Make sure you are ready and comfortable with it. Go very easy and light. I would hate for one of my remarks to cause someone an injury or tractor damage. I probably should not have mentioned it.
