Saw a post recently about a few wood splitters. What do you guys think of the split fire 3 pt model? Its a neat tidy package. But I'd have to get a princess pto pump if I were to get one of those as I don't say the tractor has enough flow

Believe my flow rate is only 7 gpm if I remember right. Believe most call for 10-11. I know princess use to sell 11gpm pto pumps...but then I'd have to get a tank etc etc. If I had other uses for the hydraulics I'd get the tank/valves and pump . But right now, work is not looking good after this covid crisis. We always used a 20 ton splitter, tow job. I do like the two way action and compact build of the split fire though.

Wood splitter on tractors ties up a tractor which is ok til need the tractor to load the wood in while splitting or need to get grocery's........... I dont know if I'd like the constant bounce, I think I'd have a stabilizer bar to the ground. Seem so if tractor FEL will lift a bucket full of dirt should run a 3point splitter....

THe tractor hydraulics would certainly power it. If the PSI is high enough you'll get the rated splitting force. The problem is that a compact tractor's low flow rate will make for rather slow splitting. If he's going to be happy with this on a typical compact, he's really going to want the PTO kit.

You may have played Jack Straws, but known it as "Pick up Sticks". Or maybe you didn't. ;)

There's an OSB mill in New Limerick (just outside of Houlton); and another up in Easton, which is the next town east of Presque Isle.
The last time that I bought OSB it was somewhere around $9.00 for 7/16; right now HD has it listed at 25.05. I wanted 18 sheets for a small building I'm putting up; but for that price I'll go down to Marden's for some tarps and wait until the prices come down to a more reasonable price.

Or buy a Hudson sawmill and learn how to use it.

It's too bad that those prices don't trickle down to those of us who are producing the wood.

Just had house and garage framed, probably 2800 sf in all. Bought the lumber in August. As usual, I paid about as much as you can pay.

I just really don't like tying up the tractor with the splitter, bought one once years ago couldn't wait to sell it and get a stand alone!
