Oldpath, how's the Beach for beams/framing lumber?

I have no idea I never sawed one into lumber before, probably saw the beech log in a couple weeks.......

A buddy of mine just bought a tractor powered processor. It's basically a cordwood saw that your cut piece falls into the splitting chamber, bumping a lever that cycles the cylinder pushing it off into a conveyor that can fill a trailer or pickup. It's all factory built and would be perfect for your roundwood. He paid $1000. I told him he sucks.

Beech is very hard, makes VERY good beams, I wouldn't want it for construction lumber though.

I really like it for cabinet grade lumber, for when I need something tough.

How do you like the Land Pride quick 3pt? I just started looking at those, I think it would make switching implements easier. Now I just keep stuff mounted and switch tractors...

I have a bunch of it here and it seems to be almost waste wood according to the loggers and forestry guy's I talk to around here. I understand that it's usually sawn into big timbers for "mud mats"
It is fantastic firewood and way up there on the btu chart and I thought of it as you said Rob, good for cabinetry, flooring and fine furniture.
Maybe jstpssing? will chime in.

I have nothing more to add, you pretty much nailed it. One of the biggest problems is the insect/disease that ruins the wood and causes premature mortality. For somebody who likes woodworking and has a sawmill though, you can make some pretty nice furniture and molding.

That's how it is here too. No saw log market at all. Just pulp and mat/tie logs and makes very good fire wood. I have heard it is very unstable so is difficult to use in furniture and flooring on a commercial basis. It used to be used for bobbins and the like but that is all gone now. It's too bad because they are very prolific trees with many survival strategies. Even with the wide spread Beech Bark disease killing them you still can't get rid of them and there are a disproportional amount of them in many northern HW stands where you would rater have Maple and Yellow Birch.
