........Was willing to try WIFI call over the cell phone but my provider informed me I would need to upgrade my cheap yearly package to a much more expensive monthly one so no thx.
You should be able to make calls over WiFi if you get free Google Voice. I even use it with my iPad. Can call anywhere in the US for free.

We got rid of our worthless landline several years ago.. It was unusable most of the time.. would not support fax or modem it was so crappy.. We ported the number to ATT wireless home phone (it was an additional line on our cell plan). Then to cut costs, we got rid of it... should have tried to port the number to Google Voice, but did not want to risk having our cell plan screwed up.. so we lost the number we had for years.. note to self, if I ever plan on changing my cell number in the future, make sure to update all the websites that have a phone number for security to Google Voice number first, then let cell number go.. it was painful getting updates done since they all want to send a code to the phone number on file which is no longer mine... I digress..

Note, you cannot port a landline number to Google voice, it says you can only port cell numbers.. so if you want to keep your landline number, get a cheap cell plan (like Total Wireless for example) and get your number ported there, then you can port it to Google Voice...

I still have my old land line number, ported it to a Verizon wireless home phone 10-15 years ago.
I've had a cell phone since it was a bag phone with a 30 minute per month package,
but I kept the land line number for local people to call as cell service is still bad here, it used to be awful now it's bad,
and if you are using a land line phone to call someone it was a toll call to a cell phone.
I could get rid of it now but I still get an occasional phone call on it, at $25 a month it's still worth it.

Most cell companies provide wifi calling if your phone is capable. I use it with Verizon.

We added a land line a few years ago. We are in an area that has no usable cell coverage. We lived here for awhile before we could get any form of communications with the outside world, we had to go into town to use a cell phone. So, as soon as we met the criteria, we had a land line installed. All the circuits were already used so the phone company had to install a new trunk cable and to tunnel under a State highway which involved the state and getting approvals to do so. Lots of time and lots of money went into getting us a land line. However, we are seniors and we got the basic "health & safety" rate of $40 for the installation. I'm sure it was more like $4k to do all that they did. We have a basic rate, but by the time the taxes and fees are added it's 4 times that cost. Still, to talk to folks from our house, it's the only way. Sometimes the cell will connect here, but rarely. We now have a satellite link so the phone is connected to wifi, but the calls over it are poor, text messaging mostly works, and the land line still works much better. However, we do have a problem with the land line when major storms come thru and may take a few days for the land line to be fixed.

IF, we had reliable cell coverage and internet linkage, we'd consider dropping the land line. (The land line has it's own power source and will work when the towers don't)

Texas needs reliable 5G service statewide.

Our land line is fiber optic, which makes for faster internet than DSL. We have cell phones which we use only when out of town; they don't work here.

I've been in AK since 1963 and all our land line, cellphone and internet has improved with each passing year. Progress has been impressive considering how poorly other rural locations across the country have done. There should be no excuse this day and age for no or sub-par service.

We only have dumb phones for emergency and letting each other know when we're coming home. Have landline and DSL and fax on it (somehow through to a different # but only one line in use).

Use the DSL now even for Roku stuff, incl. ESPN. Antenna for TV.

Could go to Comcast, as there's a line to the house. Had it for about the first 10 years here for about $10/mo. for EVERYTHING on TV until they got bought out by Xfinity (or vice versa). Cannot do any deals with them. Fixed prices. Wife wants fax. Not sure how that works with Comcast.

Depends what you call a landline. I still have a wired phone, but it's part of a cable bundle.
Don't especially want a cellphone. No need or desire to be reachable anytime anywhere. If I'm not home when you call, leave a message and I'll call back. No message, couldn't have been that important.

We have a landline only for a designated fax line.

I'm surprised anyone still uses fax. Curiously, what for?

We went wireless NBN and phone is part of the package, no call charges, unlimited data and AU$80 a month, it is useful when we have northerly winds as the mobile phone signal drops out due to bending cypress trees between us and the tower.
When we move I will probably drop it depending upon mobile coverage.
