I think those numbers are what is scaring a lot of people. If you look at it from percentages if they held the same as those figures show and the same number of people got this new virus, 35.5 million, it would result in 1.8 million deaths.

Regular flu death rate 0.0009

Corona Virus death rate .0525

The real question is are the numbers right. I am sure there are way more people with the corona virus than reported but am also sure that the regular flu has been under reported also. Just a WAG but I think the rate is high on the new virus and probably also high on the regular flu. I have had the flu several times in my life and have never gone to the doctor for it. Same for lots of friends and family.

Hopefully we don't see the numbers go nearly that high and it just goes away.

Local school district getting ready to shut down and be online learning only. The UW system will be shut down until 4/17 and they will re-eval at that time. Things are moving fast now.

My daughter did online schooling for Grades 11 and 12 so she would have the time to travel and launch her business career.

It’s the way of the future. Schools are good for social life skills but are educationally redundant.

Ohio is closing all schools starting at the end of classes on Monday, for 3 weeks. Their main goal through all of this is to limit contact in large groups. They estimate over 100,000 people in Ohio already have the virus, so they just want to slow the speed of the spread, not stop it. They said estimates right now are showing a peak in all of this by mid May. Then we can all buy TP again.

My Grand Daughter did her first two years of College in her home on the computer. Visited the College once each semester.

Similar to my daughter. She only had to go in to write exams. Always on her own timeline.

In a sense the Internet/computer networks were developed in college computer labs to basically share and disseminate knowledge i.e, teach...
Taking classes on the Internet is hardly novel or new...

Since it's a top secret where you are, might be there. Here it's relatively new with more local Colleges getting onboard each year. It's a matter of survival for them.

My wife and I took our regularly scheduled (every three months) trip to Costco today, and Holy Smokes! The place was jammed far beyond our last trip, just before Christmas. Looked like everyone in the store was stocking up on TP and paper towels. And the line to check out stretched about 2/3 the depth of the store. Crazy stuff! Good thing I don't plan to return for another three months, which I will try to stretch to four or five if this silliness continues.

These days about the only schools that don't have some sort of online classrooms are the really backwards ones with no technology departments...

Dial in networks have been around since the late 80's and available to anyone with a hard wire modem...didn't matter where...the technology is not new...

Advancements in video tech have made it possible to view lectures on demand...so it's even easier than reading transcripts...

Which, if true, says it's been around a lot longer than a few weeks.

They = State governor and the Dr.s from the health dept who have been overseeing the testing and statistics. The daily updates from them have been very factual, making people aware, and discouraging panic. Once there are 2 positive test results from community spread, it translates into over 1% infection in the community (Ohio in this case). So as of today they know that over 1% of our population is or already has been infected and it could actually be much higher. They project 70% will be infected by the time it's over. And they said it's definitely been around for many weeks, and just now being tested enough to catch more since it's spreading fast. This is all good news in my opinion, since that tells us the actual infected number is very high related to the number of deaths.

Hmmm I was not aware all those leagues have cancelled their tournaments. Since the winners of some tournaments get automatic bids to March Madness perhaps NCAA will be forced to cancel the "Big Dance" due to lack of dancers?

NCAA President Mark Emmert's statement on limiting attendance at NCAA events | NCAA.org - The Official Site of the NCAA

Yeah this seems to change hourly. The leagues were cancelling games today while teams were on the courts warming up.
And now the NCAA cancelled the tournament. It won't seem like March without the Madness.

And they said it's definitely been around for many weeks,

I'm thinking if they go back through the records of people that came to clinics for flu like symptoms back in October, September, maybe before, they'll find a history of it there.
