We lost our Maremma over 2 years ago now and still miss him badly. Thanks for the pic.

Sorry to hear, Alien. Maremmas are wonderful dogs, even if they are stubborn as a mule lol.

We actually had 2 maremmas for a while (we rescued them from a nearby farm where they weren't being taken care of all that great). Max, the male maremma, he didn't do too well with other dogs though. He bit all our other dogs, my brother's dog, my friends' (plural) dogs, and then finally bit our little toy poodle in the face, broke his jaw so bad that we had to put him down. My wife found a large sheep farm through a maremma facebook group, we re-homed him to that farm, he's doing great there.

I had noticed our Maremma lying on the lawn one day in the hot sun and didn't think much of it. A couple of hours later he was still there and it was stinky hot. He just looked at me and I realized something was wrong. I tried to move him but he was too heavy for me but seemed grateful that I was trying. I called my wife and we moved him into the shade trying to figure out what was going on. Turns out he had a paralysis tick on his tummy. Got him some water and he managed to swallow it OK. I removed the tick and within a couple of hours he was coming good so we were lucky. We have only had a couple of ticks here in 16 years.

Very hard to 'take over' a Maremma. You have to get them as a pup and teach them right from day one. Then they do what they want anyway... LOL But our Vinnie looked after all the poultry on our place like he owned them. Every evening he would wander the farm barking warning any predators to keep away. It was a ritual. Marvellous dogs.

We now have, amongst others, a Chinese crested that has a lot of similar behavioural traits as Vinnie did. We call her 'little vinnie' LOL

Ha, what are the odds Alien, we also have a chinese crested powder puff! Although others said she a tibetan terrier. Maybe both?

Tick paralysis, that's crazy! I heard of it, but never heard from somebody who actually had that happen. So you pulled the sucker off and she's fine a few hrs later, and no residual effects?

No US Mail delivery, no through traffic, no pavement, and if I still could throw a baseball, it would land in the National Forest.

That's really interesting! Are you on solar, primarily? I've got daydreams about off-grid living deep in the boonies, passive solar design house, recycling grey water, that sort of thing...and then my wife is like, are you crazy, how are we gonna get to costco?!!

Sorry to make it sound like we live in a cave and just discovered fire, ha.

But we do heat with wood, have our own well water, and our own septic system, but have real power from our local "coop" electric company (with dividend checks once in a while), and no solar for us (during the winter we get slivers of sunlight for about 1 to 2 hours a day, if it's not snowing).

Our small town (1500 pop.) is about 6 miles away (were 3 miles to highway) and it has a small medical clinic (M-F 8 to 5), a local grocery store, a Napa, a Ace Hardware, and a pharmacy, plus some other small businesses.

Our Costco, hospital, doctors, airport, and 1 small mall, etc... is about 60 miles away.

We did not want to be that far from good medical when we retired here 11 years ago.

No long term effects thank goodness.

Yes, I just love our water, have not ever tasted any better, lots of iron though and years ago added a whole house filter after the pressure tank.

Septic works great, added 24" diameter risers with the poly caps when we purchased the place (had tank pumped before purchase) and also added a filter just before the effluent flows out to the leach fields.

We also have a Chinese Crested hairless, called Socrates although everyone just calls him Soc, hates people he does not know but is fine with family, gets on well with the horses and other dogs.

Tell me more please.

I purchased 2 of these filters to have piece of mind that only liquid effluent flows to the leach field, solids if any are very, very tiny.

Septic Tank Filter

The reason I purchased 2 is so I can make a quick change out of the filter.

Then I clean the dirty filter and hang it up, so it's ready for the next quick filter change out in 6 months.

2 days ago, my GSD hurt his rear leg again (similar to human's ACL) that has a lot of scar tissue.

Yesterday he was hating life inside the house and not running around.

Aeke taking it easy.jpg

Glad to report, today he is not limping around and barely favors his right rear leg while walking.

Going to let him outside today while I'm snowblowing, but will not be throwing his Frisbee for a while for him to catch.

That cruciate ligament is a PITA. My last dog had surgery for it after an injury, my current dog had both knees completely redone, also after an accident.

   / Dog pics #2,837
Hate to tell everyone what an idiot I am, but my Newfoundland, tipping the scales at 216 lbs, blew out both knees within a months time and needed reconstructive surgery.

The cost was $5700 each knee. No hesitation at all on my part, he is a great dog, and a valued family member, but we did resort to a staycation that year, as play money was used up at the vets office that year.

My bill this time was a little over $2K. I was getting prices in the range you paid but am not in a position to shell out that kind of money. WTF is the sense in busting your tail though, if you can't spend your money on what you want?

Some years Ago. Sasha.

Dragged a deep cycle battery, timer, cheap inverter and lighted christmas tree up to the pet cemetary where he is buried, over this last holiday.

My first Doberman was constantly at the vet. I got him when I was about 27 years old.. he lived to be 13 and we spent in the 65k area over his life at the vet. ...I would do it all over again too. .. the only fault a dog has is that one day they will break your heart.
