We have a front load GE (I think ). There is a debris trap at the bottom to collect pebbles and other small stuff that could damage the pump. Since we don't have any small children around with stuff like that in their pockets, we have never found anything in it. It is a pain to empty as it's about an inch above the floor and drains about a quart of water when opened.

I found a quarter in the debris trap in mine. It was just big enough to block the water outlet, causing the washer not to drain. It's exactly as you described, right at floor level and full of water.

Samsung front loader. Samsung on the dryer as well.

Replaced my wifes washer and dryer which she had for at least 18 years (before she married me).

It's a trap at the bottom on front of the machine (little door you open up). Since we didn't spend the $350 to raise it off the ground with an overpriced piece of the same white color metal, it really does seem like a PITA because you have to drain the water on the floor and sop it up with a towel.

Reading the instruction manual, the black tube should be used to drain the washer if need be and the white cap it the top of the "pump" filter which just looks like a trap to collect debris. I love it though, the tube is two inches off the floor and the directions state "use a spacious containerbecause the water in the drum may be more than expected".

There are some things in life I do religiously when it comes to maintenance such as oil changes and changing air filters. Maintence on my washing machine once every two months (per Samsungs service center) isn't one of them.

Thing is, other than a little piece of paper in the trap, not certain what would make the machine cause such a ruckus like it was out of balance. Well keep my eye on it as we only bought it last September. At this point, not to impressed with the machine. Now feel like it's a money trap to raise it off the ground with their $350 stand, to at least get something to drain the hose into. I guess what really ticks me off is the person at the box store never pointed this out to begin with. To me, it's something people should know before they buy the machine.

I don't consider myself lazy, jut never had to perform regular maintence on a washing machine before. The girl did joke that they don't build them like they use to. That I guess I can agree with.

In the grand scheme in life, I understand there are more things that suck...

Thats why I don't buy vehicles from a dealership, the salesman didn't tell me I had to change the oil.

Two things caused the out of balance ruckus on our front loaders, when the load got hopelessly tangled (like a couple of pairs of wet jeans) and needed to be rebalanced and the other was when a metal part in the back of our first FL washer started to wear out and cut a groove in the fiberglass drum, causing the drum to go out of balance and throw the belt. Replaced the belt but couldn’t get it to not slip off then discovered the drum damage in the back. Decided a new front loader and it doesn’t match the gas dryer exactly, but who cares.

When I check the clean out on the bottom front the only thing I ever found was a small amount a jelly like grey-green sludge that smelled bad, never any solid objects.

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic.

Oil changes on most type of engines I'm familiar with is an assumption of something that has to be done. You buy a car, oil change on a regular basis is a given IMO.

As noted, I'm in my 50's, and other than not abusing a washing machine, never really had to "maintain" one on a regular basis at all. You buy a washer, I'm sorry, requiring maintence every two months per the manufacturer is new to me.

Top load washer, front load dryer. Yes, not the most efficient nor cheapest - bottom line IMHO, they just work
Amen to that. On the same line, my stove is 25+ years old, replaced the stove controller, $50 and a top element controller $30 and it's good to go another 25 years. The new electronic ones, if the controller goes bad, which is a given, you may as well buy a new stove for the price. If you do want to buy the controller, what do you do while you wait the month for parts that no one stocks.
Don't get me wrong, I like electronics as long as it's in a place that would be advantageous over a mechanical switch but when you have to push a button a dozen times to set a stove temperature, there's something wrong............Mike

We have a newer top load wash machine. It turns out that you need to "clean" it once a month with only a special kind of cleaner soap in an empty load. To me this is nuts so now we mostly wash clothes on a minimum of the warm cycle in a deep water wash. This has resulted in fewer problems with the wash machine.

on the front loaders you have to leave the door open when finished washing so it dries out, else you get mold inside, another drawback of the front loaders. they also take a lot longer to wash whites white!..

Well, don't feel like the lone ranger, I had never heard of it either. We have a fairly late model laundry pair from Korea, (LG brand) but the washer is a top loader dasherless design, and there is NO maintenance required. It just works.

So what is the ADVANTAGE to the front loaders, besides haveing a potential seal leak to make a mess on the floor. I can't see any.
