Bobcat Toolcat 5600
Hi all, first post here. I've lurked and used the info here to help drive decisions on what machine to get next, so here's to giving back. I just bought a 2016 Bobcat Toolcat 5600 with ~2100 hrs that was very clean. It's replacing a 2004 Bobcat S185 that I currently have and use for mowing ~5 miles of trails, ~7 acres of fields, plowing ~20,000 sq ft of driveway and odd jobs around the house (47 acre estate). I really want a 5610 Toolcat but having a hard time finding good shape ones used at any reasonable prices. Regardless I was torn on if I should get a Toolcat or keep the SS so I researched the disadvantages and weighed them for my use and the pros far outweigh the cons. Heres some of those as well as a bunch of pictures to help visualize the differences in size/reach.

The Toolcat disadvantages:
  1. lifting height (about 3ft less, 83.3 to 118in)
  2. lifting power (1500lbs to 1850lb ROC but both seem to be able to double those figures)
  3. bucket has less tilt capability on the toolcat, could limit some uses vs SS
  4. slightly less maneuverable (and having to change FNR lever to change directions is more cumbersome in the Toolcat)
  5. more expensive (but maybe holding value isnt a bad thing)
  6. can be harder to see attachments on the toolcat when the boom is down vs a SS
  7. probably others

The main advantages in my book:
  1. 2 seats (key for taking the kids out of the house for mom while I plow/mow)
  2. Steering wheels/pedals/cruise control/etc make for easier driving and maybe even the wife will drive it
  3. The addition of A/C and radio for me (although newer SS have those too)
  4. twice as fast as my single speed SS, better for plowing and can actually use it as a property mobile
  5. Longer wheelbase with suspension for a smoother ride (can potentially replace a need for my RZR for putting around the trails with kids but obviously not nearly as fun)
  6. Dump bed and hitch added bonuses over a SS
  7. Uses all my existing SS attachments (toolcat has a little more std flow than my SS and also has high flow where my SS does not)
  8. One of the coolest farm toys I can think of, close to a "perfect" machine for my needs and nerdy desires!

My Toolcat had a few issues I wanted to address right away, one was the typical paint chipping and corrosion at the door lowers and rockers (was just surface rust that was an easy fix on this one), driver front outside seat corner rip (ordered new seat), touch up spray in bedliner, spray bedliner in floorboards, adjust (aka wack with a mallet) driver door hinges so door doesnt rub on lower corner of door jamb, replace a few non-OE interior screws with factory ones(pet peeve of mine), and a few new stickers to replace ones I removed to paint.

Floorboard/lower door/rocker touch up (rustoleum pro primer and Bobcat touch up spray paint, matches great!):

The 3 yr old was giddy to have a "dump truck" with her own seat (not shown: me with the same expression...ha!):

The Toolcat easily handles my 1500lb brush cutter even with no counter weight:

great write up and photos. I too opted into a tool cat and got out of a S185. the only comment I have about the cat is that it is "NOT" a digging machine. by that I mean if you are really getting into some deep digging work, rent a skid steer, other than that im totally happy with mine.
I have a blower instead of a plow. you might want to look at that. I think after you blow snow you will never go back to a plow. sure is nice to sit there in a tee shirt and let the snow fly. lol
looks like you have a nice clean machine there. good luck with it in the future. this forum sure has been a help to me also. welcome to the club.

A toolcat is sorta the swiss army knife of work vehicles. It does nothing GREAT but it does many things good....and my wife can operate it!

What brand is the brush cutter?

Hey yes Ruffdog is correct. Its an MTL XC7 Direct Drive Cutter, 68" with 3 blades (was $3450, fraction of the price of many "name brand" ones). It works well for me, I used it to create some new trails and now use it to mow them and mow the fields. I made the wheels for it so I can float the boom for easier mowing, I can pop them off with 4 bolts if i want to get into heavier stuff. I used 2x3x3/16 rectangular and 1.5x0.25 DOM round tubing. Here are some pics of the cutter.

Super nice job on the wheel attachment.

Yep, the wheels are what I noticed and why I asked the brand.

Most skid steers are construction grade equipment. I would suspect that the tool cat is not in that class.

With as many old Toolcats that are still around and running, I would suspect that you are suspecting wrong.

Were the Toolcats used in construction? I look at every piece of consruction equipment I drive by. I don't think I have ever seen a single toolcat on a consruction site. Any more than seeing a CUT, SCUT or JD 110 for that matter. Just posting my observations.

Your point was Toolcats are not construction grade equipment.

My point is they are construction grade equipment, even if not used on a construction site.

Kinda like the difference between consumer grade mowing equipment and commercial grade mowing equipment.

I have seen a couple on construction jobs but not many. They are definitely construction grade equipment though.

Guess we will have to agree to disagree on that point. For starters, that delicate glass cab wouldn't last long on many sites.

Have you even sat in a toolcat? BTW... the "delicate" cab is a "ROPS/FOPS Approved Cab Structure". This is some of the testing for it to be rated as such:

Cab Certifications ROPS/FOPS/TOPS/OPS - ADC Equipment Innovations

J1119: Steel Products for Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) and Falling Object Protective Structures (FOPS) - SAE International

Certainly have. Maybe fifteen years ago or so. Just because something can protect you to a standard, doesn't mean it won't get smashed to #$#$.

The reason, you ses many popular telehandlers on constriction sites with basically a steel cage and an operators seat.

Just comparing the Toolcat weight to other equipment or a skidsteer tells you something about the class of machine.

Do you know what they weigh? Say, compared to the OP's S185?

A Toolcat 5600 weighs 5685# and is 145" long (without an attachment)
A Bobcat S185 weighs 6220# and is 130" long.
That is a difference of 535# on a machine that is 15" longer.

I would say enough to make one think. I take my clues from what I see used in real world applications. I doubt I missed gawking at very many machines on construction sites in my lifetime.
