TESLA Electric Truck?

A little off topic but we went from Illinois to Colorado for Thanksgiving. I so a lot of Teslas in Colorado.. I also so charging stations. I saw one at a restaurant in Rifle Colorado. Also at the hotel we stayed at in Kansas. I'm trying to figure out how you drive one across country though with a range of less than 400 miles. I guess short day of driving. As we got near the Eisenhower tunnel the weather got really bad and there was a Tesla next to us in stop and go traffic. I wondered how that cut down on his range.

Takes about 15 minutes to put 100 miles into a Tesla on a 120 kW Supercharger. The newest Superchargers offer 250 kW but only the last year or so of production Teslas can charge that fast.

The lower the SOC (State Of Charge) the faster the battery charges. So while charge from 30 miles to 130 miles SOC might take 15 minute, to charge from 130 to 230 might take 45 minutes. So the strategy is to make more shorter stops than few longer.

Superchargers are rarely 150 miles apart so getting off/on expect about 30 minute stop every few hours.

Define reasonable time though, if you miscalculate- perhaps a major power outage- and find yourself stranded on the side of the road.

That's IF they are not being used.

By golly, isn't it great that gas stations never fail during power outages!

The difference is that a Tesla indicates on-screen the current status of the Supercharger you are headed to and will re-route if the site is down (which is about as rare as a gas station being down.) Yes, the gas stations could have backup generators but didn't. And batteries on the phone systems didn't last many hours.

Tornados if April 2011 left me without power for 7 days. We could get gas 30 miles away but both wire and cell service were also out until hundreds of generators on trailers were brought in.

At the hotel we stopped at, I was surprised there was about 2 or 3 Teslas charging. I can't remember how many stations they had, maybe 8. I was surprised at the place in Rifle Colorado that had them, it was a Subway or Arbys type fast food place. If you stop for lunch and maybe once more during the day, that actually makes the Tesla viable as long as there are enough charging stations.

Same thing at my favorite lunch stop between home and ranch, In-N-Out Burgers by I80 in Fairfield. There are several Superchargers next door. Grumpycat posted above that a 15 minutes charge can add 100 miles.

I want a Model Y!
