Wood is our primary heat source with oil & propane as backup.
There痴 always a couple hundred gallons of oil on hand so it was the obvious choice for me.
Plus I was tired of the stale gasoline issues.

90cummins, I see your Yanmar must be using belt drive to turn the generator head. Are you using a 1:1 ratio or are you using a larger pulley on the drive shaft to reduce RPMs?

Anyone have a steam or water powered generator?
In my thoughts I always wanted to live at an old mill pond site and harness the water wheel to run the homestead.
Only seen it once and it was impressive...
A blacksmith shop going back generations with a water wheel for power... nothing fancy, just a flume diverted to a maybe 9' wheel that turned overhead shaft... the shaft powered a blower for the forge, DC Generator, the Hammer and a heat coil that kept a 200 gallon tank HOT...
The generator was rather large and very old... he said all he does is keep the oil cups full and belt tensioned...
I will try to take some pictures if I ever get back to my cousins place again... the Smith is her neighbor.
I have also seen a working windmill... of the Dutch variety that was originally used for grain converted to run a generator... again DC... so this ancient tech is hooked up to a very sophisticated invertor providing power to the home.

Slightly off topic but worthy of mention.
Last month's generator fuel for the PSPS fuel has been covered and then some by Utility.
Opened utility bill and found $100 credit for Customer Satisfaction.
Checked with neighbors and found the same... I understand $100 residential and $200 commercial to those affected... even have a credit carrying forward to next month.

that's good to know. My sister in Muir Beach was without power for 5 days. I emailed her and asked her to check her
electric bill.
I think she is going to cave in and spend an absurd $21k for a 22kw Generac installed. Lowest bid they've gotten.
I hope it comes with gold fixtures...

I'm a fan of hydro-electric in general..... not an option for me at the moment, but I have a buddy in BC that has a great site for micro-hydro. If I win a lottery, it would be fun to go for a working vacation at his place.....
Been a while, but have read plenty of issues of Homepower magazine..... lots of interesting projects.

Right now everyone that wants work has it... across the board with the trades in highest demand.
Everyone is busy rebuilding entire communities of fires past and present plus this push to build more housing because this is a crisis.
Some very high profile projects shovel ready with entitlements and permit ready are being offered for sale... only one reason the projected cost to construct is up as much as 40%...
Even one of the old time locksmiths is as busy as he wants to be... I said I thought you were going to retire and he said I keep raising my prices and as busy as ever.
He quoted $850 to install a lockset on a new entry... I said that is a lot of money since customer already has the lockset?
His response is the entry cost 20k and they would hang me if something went wrong... jobs I don't want I quote high... customer called back and said how soon can you get it done... kind of insane... people with money are finding money talks but those with skills have a seat at negotiations...
I got a very high bid from a roofer... he said he could do it for less if I didn't need it now... fair enough... I ended up doing a repair myself.
The Mom and Pop Mower shop sold all their Honda 2200i generators at $1049... same price as before outage. He said he could have padded the price but being a Mom and Pop they live or die on reputation...
