On a different note...next time you get good service at a restaurant, make it a point to compliment and thank the staff...including an appropriate tip. You might be surprised at the responses you get. I concluded that compliments are few and far between in that business. My daughter used to wait tables, and rude and unappreciative customers are not unusual. Seems some folks like to display their superiority over folks just trying to make a living.

No kidding. Wife and I were out to dinner one night. I had a horrible day at work. Was in a pissy mood. Waiter made a really bad joke (like lame not like racist or something) that for whatever reason lightened my mood.

At the end of the meal I asked him to see the manager. He thought he was in trouble. When he realized I was complimenting him to the manager you would have though I left him a $100 tip. He always took great care of us whenever we would go back to that place.

I always thank wait staff even if in a conversation, know one woman who thinks it is her place to be rude to them, I told her that they may remember her in 10 years when they could be her Dr.

Good one!!!

When I am properly served I tip beyond the normal. Used to bother my wife. She's gotten used to it. :)

I try and make sure to complement good service, I know I sometimes complain about poor service so it is only right to make sure I complement the good.

My girls had a DCI pit instructor that had a firm policy that he reminded kids of throughout the season. If you are doing your job right, he would not say anything (good or bad). If you exceeded expectations, he commented with positive feedback, same for negative if you were doing your job less than expected. He said kids were much calmer that way, they were not wondering if they screwed up all the time when he was silent. He did not nit pick either. I watched some pretty poor performers step up and perform. They knew what was expected and they knew how they were doing.

I try to tip waitstaff well. I make every effort to thank them by name as we leave. Excellent waiters/waitresses can make eating good food transform into a great experience.

One waitress behind the counter at a place we frequent offered us menu's as we looking at the menu on the wall over the counter, I asked if there was more on it, she said no but it saves your neck looking up.
We don't tip here like in the US but she got one, another time she sat with me as I was by myself and asked if I was OK, I was and said my wife was shopping and would be here shortly but it's nice to know someone cares about their customers.

I once had enough of my worst complaining customer. I used to cringe when I saw his number on caller I.D. I told him that maybe he would be happier if he went elsewhere. He changed his tune (for a little while, anyway) after that. It's not really right that the Aholes get things cheaper and the nice people pay full pop.

I used to do a lot of portable welding after working 8 hour days. Had one guy who would want me right there when he called. I charged accordingly. He would fuss and complain about the price. He is a multi millionaire.

A friend told me once “charge people what you think it’s worth and they’ll either pay you or quit calling”. The guy quit calling after about 10 years.

I’ve all but quit doing side welding jobs. Got burnt out on it. Money only makes you happy if you spend it, if it’s not fun making it, stop making it that way and find another.

Thinking about it I had an rude experience like the OP had about 10 years ago we used to patronize a good fruit/vegetable market very close to my parents place.
One day I mentioned to the owner I had a truckload of good hardwood firewood I'd like to have delivered my place to parents, about 15 miles. I had no truck at the time.
Owner said his 25yo son could do it... I said of course we'd expect to pay him.
Few days later the son shows up and I had wood all stacked, I helped him load it and he left. As I say, parents to fruit stand where son worked was about 1/4 mile apart, 15 miles from my place.
So 30 minutes later the son calls me. "I unloaded it where your Dad wanted it...he went into house to get my money...what should I charge?"
I'm thinking...this guy is 25... he should know...he's like 3 minutes away from fruit stand. Asking me what to charge?!? I said...only you know, but my guess...$50?
He says "that's what I thought too...your Dad is walking out with $50 now".

Few days later we stop by the fruit stand. This 25yo guys "Mommie" sees us...runs out..."You took advantage of my boy!!!!!!!!!!!
$50 measly dollars. I said "he's an adult...I helped load it...it took, what, an hour? Some gas? Dad (rip) paid cash." She was still fuming when we left.
We've never been back since.

I once went into a local country grocery store and asked for apple cider. The older guy, I'm guessing he had some authority, snapped back "I don't know, I don't drink the stuff". I was a little taken aback, but the more I think about all the phonies in the world and people keeping up a fake facade, I kind of like his harsh kind of honesty.

After moving to a new town and was in the process of building a shop. The town had two competing hardware stores and I’ve been splitting my business with them until one Spring day when I walked in looking to buy a 50a 4-pronged twist lock receptacle.

Owner asks “What for?"

Now I'm a little taken aback by that but just decided to appease him. "It's for supplying power to a RV"

He says "There's no RV that uses 50a. Only 30a"

Today, there's only one hardware store in town and you can guess which one went out of business.

What's so bad about that? Here, you would have to explain to some seventeen year old what a Twist Lock was.

Because he’s wrong. Some RVs especially ones with multiple air conditioners do have 50 amp hook ups. Not that it even matters. Sell the guy the 50 amp plug he wants. Now not having the 50 amp plug which probably isn’t a big seller is understandable.

The owner was basically calling him a liar or an idiot. Either knowingly or unknowingly.

Now granted, if he said "Are you sure? My personal experience is that RV's only use 30A, I've never heard of one using 50A and I'd hate to see you leave with the wrong part" would of been more diplomatic (even tough his thinking or intentions may of been identical).
If he didn't care that you left with wrong part he never would of asked or said that. He DID care, which is more than other places.
Bad communication skills and lack of seeing other's perspectives on owner's part. Doesn't mean he was trying to be a d*ck, or had ill will towards buyer, but....

I don't see the issue. The salesperson was trying to avert a mistake, even if he was wrong. I went to the Beer Store (Yes Communist Country) a few years ago with a lot of empty cans for refund. I had a brain fart and told the girl (manager) that I had far less than I had. And screwed myself. But she never said, hey, are you sure? It looks like way more than that. Some would say, she shouldn't argue with the customer who is always right. I have not been back to that store, and won't darken their door. Interestingly, I told that story to the girl at another Beer Store and she gave me some money for compensation. How is that for customer service? The first girl basically said, too bad, so said, I already dumped them.

Did you ever consider that maybe she didn’t notice? Then you never went back to a store because you shorted yourself. Way to be a tough guy.

I realized after I posted this, that I had made an error. Not going by my own beliefs. It's easy to fall into that trap. It had nothing to do with her. Two things that immediately jump to mind. One, I screwed up and wanted to blame someone else. And two, annoyed that she didn't pay more attention to MY matters. They say the opposite of LOVE is not HATE but indifference.

In the immortal words of the Beatles..." In the end, the love you make is equal to the love you take " That about settles it...

The answer you should have given that cashier is.

I have no problem with my attitude!

It is others who have a problem with it!

So don’t upset me with your stupidity and you won’t have to deal with my attitude!

I have had a few that couldn’t follow instruction and tried getting mouthy with me. They were all quickly put in thier place and the few who thought they could count on the manager to tell this customer haw it’s going to be were only successful in getting themselves or the manager in trouble.

I'm guessing you honestly believe the customer is always right? I stil remember that "line" (the customer is always right) working late second shift in Easton Pa at a convenience store when I found a customer standing directly BEHIND the cash register. I corrected him pretty fast and he moved. I didn't get fired or reprimanded over it.

Due onto others as you would have done unto yourself is a pretty good rule to live by IMO for all aspects of work per customer service.
