If your vehicle is legal to run on the road then no problem with inspection. Seems to me the only ones that would have a issue are those that do not want to run legal vehicles. A few bucks and a hour or less once a year is not much to ask to help eliminate some of the common problems. Sure some will find a work around. Those should be dealt with aggressively and extremely harshly by law enforcement during the rest of the year.

Separate issue that needs to be dealt with is that accidents need to be investigated and the cause found and dealt with. The common case of writing a report for the insurance company and going back on patrol is a problem.

Poor drivers not following standard rules should also be dealt with.

All of the above issues here in Oklahoma are common and seldom dealt with.

So.. again you are saying the inspections once a year don't prevent the accidents you fear most.

The only thing they accomplish is costing drivers $$$$$ .

WOW - You are reading what you want to read and trying to make an argument.

I cant think of anything that is alway 100% perfect, without fail. Even if the inspector lived in your car, he is human and can and will miss things. The point is if it works and stops JUST 10% of unsafe vehicles then it is worth the couple bucks to me. Maybe the 1 life it saves a year is yours....
If the inspection is that big of a deal to you, take an Uber - you won't need to inspect anything again.

But the problem is that some of the things your inspection declares unsafe, will not fail for the life of the vehicle & only cost the owner big $$$$$.
Out of 100k defects for bad ball joints, you MAY get 1 in 10 years that fails on the hiway.

What you are identifying are possibly maybe could be problems that might cause an accident under ideal conditions.

And those things still happen even WITH costly inspections.

The question being discussed - value of motor vehicle safety inspections - is directly on point for a thread which is about people hauling or towing something wrong.

If you want to see more pics instead of words why are you not posting any pictures?

In my opinion this was a very unsafe load. It was insufficiency secured and seemed to be too much weight for the truck. Had those slabs fell out of the back of that truck in the traffic on IH35 there would have been some major problems.

But it didn’t and no yearly motor vehicle safety inspection was going to impact it.

That picture's been posted before and I think it was determined the slabs were properly secured to the A frame between them which may be bolted to the truck bed. Not sure about the overweight issue.

What is the material?

Just because a load is untypically high doesn't make it dangerous.

Shame the Tractor was obscured. :D

Can someone explain, why someone would put those tires on a truck? Is it for extra road noise or to increase fuel consumption, or just to spend more regularly on tires and front end work?

And once again you miss the point because you focus on conjecture, supposition and assumptions.

<Shrug>. Seems like politics bickering. It's run its course. No minds are being changed. No actual information/stats/learning is happening.

If I had one, I would. I'd have to go do something wrong to get the pic... I can tell a story about losing half a dozen sheets of OSB out of my truck (many years ago). People showed up from all over and we loaded it back up. Probably equal to the time it'd have taken to strap it down... Good lesson, won't happen again.

I have yet to figure out why people do that... put wide offroad type tires on it that have zero clearance and zero side wall, you could air down to -10psi and not increase the surface area a lick... I like sidewall... My Ranger has 35" tires on 15" wheels, my F350 has 35" tires on 16" wheels... the previous owner of my F350 put a 4" lift on it, I lowered it back down 2"... People claim the short sidewalls are for towing or handling but they take corners like a granny carrying a basket of eggs on her head while I'm passing them with my tall sidewall vehicles carrying a camper while towing another one of them...

Incorrectly securing loads and hauling or towing unsafe loads has little to do with vehicle safety inspections.

With a properly maintained vehicle at least there is less possibility of a accident.

Un safe loads and towing issues are items that have to be handled as the situation arises by law enforcement. Often overlooked around here and ignored on accident reports.

This smoker bouncing down the highway with tires that should not be on a state highway , or highway speeds, no lights, no safety chains is a typical example.

I have wondered if the low profile tires are just aimed at the ultra stupid. Sell them a quarter of the tire for four times the price. Wreck your rims and dental work when you hit a pothole!

The biggest crime with that smoker has to be the paint job.

Apparently they have the sales pitch worked out pretty well from what I can see :)

An unsafe load can cause even the safest and most up to date vehicle to wreck.

I had a customer tow a DR field and brush mower like the type you tow behind a atv or garden tractor 35 miles behind their pickup truck to my shop for engine repairs.
