I somehow think this trend is described as 'inflation' vs shrinkage, or camouflaged as such.

But notice salaries/wages don't increase as fast inflation does.

An O/T tangent...Stated values in advertising make me laugh...are people really that gullible??

I try not to pay attention to commercials but sometimes it can be hard to escape them...One of the current ones that is ludicrous is the mail order steak company...Do people really think they are getting $250 worth of meat for $50??

Do people really think that shower head and valve for a walk in tub is worth $850??

And what is as scary as it is funny is the fact that telephone psychics make enough money to buy television advertising...

That one's annoying, but I can write it off to marketing. The one that really ticks me off is the MAP Scam; 'Add to cart to see our 'too low to show price'. Or you see an item for exactly the same price, down to the penny at every website or retailer. Manufacturers should not be able to dictate to or strongarm retailers like that.

Why is the third 80# bag of concrete so much heavier than the first two?

Locally a 60 pound bag is a cheaper unit cost. Not cheaper per bag which obviously it is but cheaper per pound. We all know which is easier to handle.

When visiting my Canadian friend in Vancouver she said when the United States sneezes Canada catches cold... alluding to how intertwined our economies are.

I see shrinkage everywhere... the qty count of everyday items is shrinking... use to buy trash bags in 52 count... one bag a week for 52 weeks... then it was 48 and now 42...

I used to have to do cost per unit comparisons myself. In the last few years the grocery stores have started listing the cost per ounce. It’s shocking how often the bigger package cost more per unit. And I meant everything not limited to paper products.

Oh cheeses !!!

You'd think the two pound package (shredded or chunks) would cost the same or less per ounce than four half pound packages, if nothing else due to less packaging costs. Nope. Often a few cents more per ounce.


Then there are the items that are exactly the same price per ounce, no matter the package size.

Been that way for many years now. The tubes have been getting noticeably larger since the 80s, too. (1/2" since the '60s) Deeper pattern imprints make the paper roll up fluffier, but it's more 'loosely' rolled, too.

I'd rather it was priced by the pound.

Back in the dark ages, when I took EC101, the instructor told us that deficit spending was ok for a government. Supposedly there were no adverse consequences. I did not understand, but memorized the words for the test. Since then, something I read says that deficit spending is the primary cause of inflation. Sound reasonable to me.

Funny, I noticed the rolls move around on the Holders more than before and was wondering why.
Also, one idea that I am not sure ever really got off the ground, "No center cardboard roll", what's up with that !
