Around here those guys run all year without lights, but my sedan with a tail light out will get a ticket within a half hour of it going out. I keep spares in the glovebox now ...
One of my peeves is people who can't be bothered to run trailer lights on units which are so big that you can't see the lights on their tow vehicle. I followed a contractor's trailer today through early morning traffic, trying to guess what he was doing. When we both stopped at the same place for gas I asked him if he knew his lights were out.
"Yeah", he said, They worked last week but..." and made it pretty plain that he didn't give a rat's behind about how unsafe he was.

Or how about turn lights that are wired backwards? Left turn signal and then turns right. As he turned the truck right signal was on and the trailer left turn signal. I don't understand - but he obviously never checked his lights after wiring them and it's so easy to do.

Makes me wonder what that kind of advertising actually does for sales. I think, it often just impresses the business owner the most. Other people really couldn't care less.

Maybe they just hit the hazards. That’s a practice I sometimes do. But if I’m working on a rewire project I usually test both turns, running, and brake.

I hit the hazards and headlights every time I hook up a trailer to make sure that all the lights work, but if I were rewiring it, I would check the turn signals individually to make sure that they were not backwards.
