Why is it so hard to find durable insulated work gloves?

Why has this become so difficult? I am looking for good quality insulated leather work gloves yet any I find in stores don't seem durable and the big Amazon is full them but with very mixed reviews.

I turn to you my fellow TBN'ers, have any of you found insulated leather work gloves that really hold up to the abuse of handling firewood or farm chores without losing their insulating quality or just flat out falling apart? I'm looking for gloves that are warm down to about 20 deg F.

This is a subjective question. I hate gloves when I’m actually working. I don’t wear any till it gets to about 35 then it’s something fairly light.

Gloves are a consumable. I’d use a light cotton glove and your favorite leather glove over that. I don’t think throwing money at it makes the gloves any better.

Different story for winter sports gloves- for skiing etc I have nice gloves. But those aren’t for firewood etc.

Me too, on the cheap cotton work gloves. I rather have ten pairs on the go, than a couple that are wet or missing in action. When working, your hands don't get cold anyway. For other non work tasks, insulated ones, or even mits are nice and last a long time. The mits are great if you have messed up fingers that have poor circulation.

I must have 20 pair and none are truly worth the money. I have had the fleece pull out when I withdraw my hand and it never goes back in. Now I have a pair of Carhartt leather gloves with fleece lining. They are warm but the leather is hard after they get wet. Try an Army-Navy store, you will be surprised at what they have.

I wear Kinco Thinsulate gloves. For the price they really aren't that durable but they are warm, and I usually do get 2 seasons out of them. When the trees are covered with snow I usually carry 3-5 pairs in a ziplock bag, and change them out every couple of hours.

I bought some brown long sleeved ones at Lowes a few years back. Still good. I use them when using my chipper/shredder and ear and face shield after having a hand pruner get kicked back out at me when dumping some leaves in for shredding. They have a fake sheep's hair lining. Haven't seen them in quite a while in Lowes. Last I looked for long sleeved ones, they were gray and not insulated.

You might try something from Superior Glove, i don’t know if the link above is exactly what you want/need but they have a ton of styles. I wear these in the oilfield and they are great. Or just do a google search on oilfield gloves and look at the options. Lots are rated at 20 degrees and below. Expensive, mine were like 40/pair. Good luck.

I don't own a pair of cotton socks; they were always soaked from sweat before I even got into the truck. For the same reason I don't wear cotton gloves; once they get wet the insulating quality goes to 0. There's a difference though between working in your yard or woodlot next to the truck or tractor, vs snowshoeing 3 miles after riding the snowsled 15 miles beyond the truck. There's an old adage; "cotton kills."
