when I was young and growing up in the 90's my parents owned land in the country but also a nice house in the city on 2 acres so my brothers and I could go to good schools. For the first 5-6 years we had no problem with the HOA they just maintained the neighborhood park and made sure lawns were mowed but were not over reaching. One day during board elections that all changed. My father build race cars and restored old mustangs, we had an approved garage detached from the house. The new board of the HOA passed rules against having more than 4 vehicles on any property, no trailers, no campers. My fathers additional garage had 3 car lifts in there along with 2 motorcycle lifts and about $100k in Snap-on tools. Between my father, mother and 2 brothers we had 10 cars, 8 motorcycles and 4 dirtbikes. We also had 2 car hauler trailers for taking the race cars to the track. We only ever had 2 vehicles outside that garages and did not clutter the street. The HOA targeted us and sending fines for violating the rules stating we had to get rid of vehicles and the trailers. This is what pushed us out of the nice neighborhood and moved full time to our ranch house in the country which was about 45 min outside of town. My brothers and I had to use a friends address so we could finish out last few years of school. So I have a very bitter taste in my mouth for HOA's, we did not park our cars out on the street or even the driveway yet they still attacked us.
