For a fencer and its high voltage, it works. For any kind of protection (aside from lightning) at 120/240 it just about useless.

Once again, I hear my Pharma Warehouse customers 120 Grand Generator failed in the cold. AND as usual it had been tested just a week before. Servers all went for a crap after UPSes died.

I don't think that thing has ever worked when needed.

Sad. It would only take a country boy on site to get it going, but everybody relies on things being "fully" automatic, and in the end they have NOTHING!

Curious.... is that 120k boat anchor running on natgas ?

Diesel. Apparently the block heater failed. I monitor the machine for trouble, but maybe loss of heat isn't tied into their trouble panel.

It does get me thinking. A lot of people work there. I am sure not one doesn't have a "SMART" phone. Yet with all those smarts, they can't help themselves. It's sad. Everyone relies on someone else. Government, utilities, companies, the Internet. Maybe it's even sadder that they probably don't even realize the position they have willfully put themselves in. They think they are on top of the world with their devices!

You monitored the engine for trouble, and the failed block heater was missed??

Someone wasn't monitoring too well. lol

Best looking screen on the planet means nothing, if you don't have the data,....

For remote monitoring, today, I'm surprised that coolant temperature is not reported. Guessing it wasn't a gearhead that signed off the deal....

Plenty of diesel-fired coolant heater options available...... too bad they didn't go that direction.....

I only monitor their panel for a single fault signal. I bet, some expert didn't think loss of temperature was worth monitoring. You would think, keeping a BIG expensive genertor warm, would involve some equipment beyond a simple block heater and enclosure heater.

Measuring and reporting coolant temperature is relatively trivial to do..... would give useful data at both ends....... cold snap we just had, and at high temps too....... just program your alarm limits as you see fit.

Spend that much money, and have no access to info that dashes on cars delivered back in my grandparents day ? Progress ?

It was probably far too complex to incorporate a system that monitors ambiant temperature and then makes a decision if the genny is warm enough. Some of the guys that I have met that worked on that machine, simply didn't have a clue. Pretty much normal for this day and age.

All of our Hospital Generators are required to have remote monitoring in two places...

One is Engineering and the other goes to the Recovery Nurse Station... believe me if it goes audible anytime day or night the Nurses start making the calls.

Normal is 3 green indicators from 20... and one of the green indicators is coolant temp...

The color system works well in a Hospital... Green is Good, Amber requires Attention and Red with Audible requires Immediate Action...

In 27 years I have replaced a total of 4 block heater elements.

One of my good friends is a retired facility engineer... vast knowledge and quickly schooled me years ago when I was grumbling... he said we call it job security...
