Maybe lighting, lost two cows and injured another under a large Ash tree about 50 years ago.

Here is that tree that killed the 2 renters heifers. I knew it was dead but it sure disintegrated when it hit the ground. The heifers were not even under any wood, just laying dead on the ground near the debris. Really weird. The base is 5 feet in diameter.

That seems like an act of God to me. Sounds like you’re off the hook to me.

Had some generous friends visit! Eight total-- running two splitters against recent giant oak tree limb trimmings. We produced about 5 cords total, split and stacked. Not as much as some crews, but a pretty good day for mostly city folks!

The team was quickly processing the downed pile of limbs. But my tractor started bringing in the BIG rounds in picture C. From the trunk of a once mighty oak, there were about 15 of these. That work/effort slowed things a bit. :D Even the removed oak limbs were huge-- most of what is in picture D are limbs, especially to the right of the picture. They are the size of many trees.

My tractor dealer advised: "never loan your tractor." But I did so to one of the volunteers, and it got winged from a falling round (G). That's OK- I can get it fixed. I am so appreciative of help-- just me working alone would have taken forever to generate this much splitting and stacking production. But now it's on me to finish the unprocessed pile, and there is plenty left ...

That's a lot more bending over than I could handle, but it sure is nice to have it done!

Two splitter operation... nice.

Is the pergola purpose built for fire wood?

It's a shame about the tractor but seen it too often... back in the day the rental yards had the commercial Kubota B21 that used steel plate... near indestructible.

Yes it is. One splitter is a Split-EZ built in Bakersfield, CA. Designed for eucalyptus trees-- very tough. The other is a gently used Iron and Oak splitter I picked up recently from someone moving away.

When I bought a used splitter Fire Wood actually became fun...

We have a never ending supply of storm fall oak and drag up a few massive limbs and good to go...

Can't really burn much here anymore when it is cold and new installs are not happening... Air District

One of the things everyone looks forward to is gathering at my brothers ranch... they have a small pedestal stove and also plenty of storm fall.

My sister in law said the stove was going the day they got the old farm house... I said OK... I will load it up!... then a long pause and she said maybe hold off on that.

It turns out the spot next to the stove is her favorite place in the winter.

Christmas 35 gathered and I kept the home fires going... the kids loved being in the family room that was nice and toasty... using wood Mom split and stacked two years prior.

For some of the younger guests... it was the first time they every had the chance to appreciate the warmth of a wood fire... by kids I mean 10 and under.
