Thank You Veterans
On June 6, 1944, my dad, a 19 year old kid, stepped off the ramp of an LCM carrying a 65 lb backpack, a ***** and no doubt the fear that this morning would be his last. The water at Omaha Beach was over his head and only with the help of a tall kid behind him did he avoid drowning. Then they ran headlong into a massive killing field of machine gun fire, mortar rounds and artillery from the high ground. Wounded and dying kids were lying all around them, screaming in pain, some blown into pieces. Blood and body parts were everywhere. Those kids not only survived, but went on to save the world from the tyranny that threatened to engulf it, then they came home and built America into the greatest, most productive, and the most open society in the history of the world.
Truly the were THE GREATEST GENERATION!

Thank you veterans, all veterans of all wars, you did your duty to your country. When your time comes, God rest you all in peace.

Randy, well said. The Omaha Beach part of Saving Private Ryan is very hard for me to watch.

at the Blue Star memorial there were a number of marines there, including a speaker. Semper Fidelius was heard a number of times.

After unloading a lot of bags of fertilizer, and realizing the helper had put the last two bags on wrong, back downtown I went, and this time he gave me 15-0-15 like I asked for, not triple 10. Then he loaded twenty bales of coastal hay, which I really didn't want to buy now and keep over the winter but they could not guarantee me any in the Spring. Bird in hand...

I get home, put the tarp over the hay in the trailer as a lot of rain is coming in, and went to unload those last two bags of fertilizer. Oh no, they gave me weed and feed, not fertilizer. Yes marked the same for the fertilizer portion, but I asked for fertilizer, not weed killer. Made for lawns, just the wrong stuff. I might have to hunt around for this mix, it's what goes under the orchard trees. New helper at store, not quite up to speed it seems.

It was 1° for the low this morning. Yesterday was in the low 30's with partly cloudy skies and 10-15 mph wind. Today is going to be about the same, the forecast says it's going to be in the mid 50's by the middle of the week.

My dad wasn't in the service. He was 31 when the war started he was also married and had a dependent. He was working in the gold mines in Colorado. If I remember right all the mines were closed during the war. He ended up in Seattle working in the shipyards building ships for the war.

I have a great respect for anyone that has served in the military and thank them for their service. Three of my brothers have been in the military. When I tried to join in 1976 they said thanks but no thanks. Because of a operation on a bad knee.

Not much going on today, I'll find something to keep me busy.

Hope everyone has a great Monday.
CWB.

49° here this morning and misting rain. Expected high is 54°.

Forecast is for mid 30's and very windy tomorrow.

Our exterminator, who is also a Veteran, came by this morning for our 90 day service. He and I lamented how we were both working today ...... while the mailman gets the day off? Oh well.

RNG, glad to hear that you've dodged the bullet this time and hope you can get back home soon. Goes to show that all your preventive work was not wasted time.

Hope everyone has an excellent day!

Prayers to all.

Good Morning!!!! 42F @ 8:45 here in Chico, CA this morning. Some clouds this morning will give way to generally sunny skies for the afternoon. High 69F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph.

Dad was 4F for WWII; he had scarlet fever as a kid and it left him with bad hearing. I was almost drafted for the Viet Nam war, but Nixon pulled out the troops a year before I graduated high school. Worked with a lot of military organizations and brass during my career, and you could call me a cold warrior. If I told you any more than that, they'd have to kill you, though.

Not much happening on the fire front; another neighbor called and said the house was still standing, the other neighbor called to say he felt the car was safe where it was and to not bother trying to move it. I offered to load the truck up with supplies and bring it in if he can coordinate an escort with the local deputy sheriff, so we'll see what happens with that. No word yet on lifting the evacuation orders, but there is active fire south and east of my location so I'm guessing it'll be at least another few days.

Got a couple fix it projects here at my friend's house, and I might try to get down to the Oroville post office and pick up my mail. Not sure what UPS intends to do with parcels until they can get in to deliver them. Ordered a new windshield suction cup mount, to be delivered here, so I can video the trip back to the house. Might be interesting.

Hope everyone's week gets off to a good start!

34°F and cloudy this morning, going up to 41° today. Expecting some rain and then snow later this afternoon. May get up to 2". It's supposed to start just before the afternoon drive time, so that will surely be interesting. Hoping the lighter Veterans' Day holiday traffic will help some. Going to drop down into the 20s tonight, so any mushy or wet stuff will freeze.

Yesterday was a fairly pleasant day, so I took advantage of it for some outside stuff. Got my side of the garage cleared out, so we can now park both cars in there for the first time since the remodel started early last year. Little victories.

Put the rear blade back on the tractor in anticipation of the coming snow, then got the rest of the unused lumber from Deckasaurus moved out to the barn. Some of the smaller pieces ended up in the pasture burn pile, but most of it got stacked in the barn.

Kyle, none of our chickens have proven to be very broody. The Wife left five eggs in one of the laying boxes for about the last month. Every time I went out there to check for eggs, there was no one sitting on them. After about 4 weeks, we tossed them. When we open the hen house every morning, they all come jumping out of there as fast as they can to get to the food and water, even on cold mornings. We have talked about putting some kind of heat in there for them. We don't want to put a light in there, though, because it might disrupt their dark winter break from laying eggs every day.

RNG, great news that your house survived.

No one in my family served in WWII. It caught us in-between generations; grandparents too old, and uncles too young. Several served in Korea and Vietnam, though. None talk much about the combat experience. My oldest stepson is the same way about his Iraq experiences. He'll talk endlessly about the everyday life stuff, and usually has us rolling in tears over his presentations of how ridiculous military life is. The combat stuff, though, he rarely discusses. When he gets "that look," we change the subject. War is ugly.

Good morning to all! (Tried to post this morning, but TBN was again malfunctioning). We awoke to a blanket of 6" of the white stuff. High only reached 26, now cooling back down to a predicted low of 5.... That's way too cold.

We had leave for my Doc appt. 45 minutes earlier than expected due to the weather...took us 1 1/2 hours to get there vs the normal 40 minutes. Glad there was less traffic than usual due to the holiday.

So, we're in the waiting room... My daughter calls in hysterics... I thought she got in an accident....she says: " I can't see anything...it's a white-out and my driver's side wiper just broke off!". "I don't know where I'm at". She was basically in the middle of nowhere. After calming her down, I was going to talk her through removing the passenger wiper to put it on the driver's side....guess what? For the first time in a year and probably 10 visits.....they call me back into the exam room early ! ....I'll call you back...stay calm....

So...I call her back...she gets the broken wiper off....then is able to take off the passenger wiper....the plastic mount breaks off when she's trying to put it back on.....hysterical again....ok, ok, calm down....she's wearing high heals and a dress. Told her to call her clinic and cancel her pt's appointments.

The worst of this situation is that she has been driving for 3 1/2 hours in this weather, delayed tremendously...she's only halfway to where she works (normally a 3 hour trip). She called for roadside assistance....3-4 hour response....no way.

So, Daddy says...stay where your at...when I'm out of the Doc visit, I'll be on my way and find you. Visit was done 5 minutes later and I was on my way. GPS put her out in the middle of the Zuni Indian Reservation. I got to her 1 1/4 hours later....fixed the Jeep's wipers (I carry a set in mine), and she was on her way. We had a very scenic 4 hour drive back home. It's ok, could have been much worse.

She told me the so called "techs" at WallyWorld supposedly changed the wipers about a month ago....boy I would be back in there talking to the manager in a heartbeat. She said "let it be, I just won't go back there"... Not my point...

Sorry for the long post. To sum up the day....I'm scheduled for another surgery on the 27th. He wanted to do it the day before thanksgiving....no way... You guys aren't rushing to get it done so you can leave for a holiday weekend....

Prayers out for all you guys...hope your week goes well. I'm back to work tomorrow...maybe it will be calmer than my days off....
