I was impressing my daughter with how fast my grinder cut the bicycle lock, that she had lost the key for.

Until she giggled that I had set my pants on fire.

:irked:

I’ve never set pants on fire. Blue jeans are pretty resistant to it. Shirts can’t take as much. But I still don’t think the fire was set by safety chains.

Yes, I should have added that I cut that lock with the grinder after I came in from work still wearing nylon casual slacks. Levi's wouldn't have burned.

Shouldn't weld wearing fleece sweatpants either!

There have been fires started from skidder tire chains sparking as they slipped on rocks. You have never gotten behind somebody at night who is dragging a safety chain, and seen how the sparks fly off from it?

Or polypropylene thermal undershirts.

I’ve seen the sparks for dragging chains, but they mostly go behind the trailer on the road.

Not a safety chain and not hundreds of thousands of acres. Blown out tire and the driver kept going. The bad tire was on the drivers side, which is middle of the road. Driver left a series of fires for a mile and a half and we are not all that dry here. My understanding is that 5 trucks ran on the call and thankfully got them under control fast.

The myths start! Can't see safety chain sparks traveling very far. Some idiots cigarette butt, yes.
Saw a fire strung along an interstate for several miles once, from dragging chains.

I still don't believe it. Try grinding steel, quick put down the grinder and start a fire with one of the sparks! Maybe, red hot shackles coming off. Still a stretch if you ask me. Just MORE FAKE news!

I was using the angle grinder in the driveway and throwing a shower of sparks and a flame started on my Acetylene hose fitting... it was not as tight as it should have been... so I check now!

We had a guy with a solvent rag catch on fire at the grinder...

Followed someone on the road dragging safety chains and quite a show the sparks put on.

One thing the Brits learned as they took back the Falklands/Maldives from the Argentine invasion was: All their fancy new thermal cold weather gear causes nasty burns under combat conditions. I think they went back to cotton and wool.

The most detailed news report I've seen said something unspecific about a "Mechanical failure of vehicle" - I've definitely not seen anything outside of forums like this one where anyone has claimed what actually caused the fire in a more detailed way.

I rather doubt a chain would normally cause a fire, but a long enough chain dragging when the vehicle is going around a left curve, so the chain is dragging on the edge of the pavement, on a rural road with dry grass right next to the pavement - that could do it... maybe.

My guess is either a vehicle fire, or a breakdown / pullover / parked over grass - but this is speculation.
