Buying Advice Is JD worth the money

My previous tractor was a John Deere 850 and it was good.

Vince, your previous tractor was actually a Yanmar, painted green.:D

Ffphil, I don't think it's any where near worth it in that 4044 market segment, too many other good choices out there that are at minimum, equal machines but a far superior value. Now I believe that difference diminishes as you get into the bigger ag tractor market.

edit; just scrolled down "today's posts" and this was there.http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-owning-operating/393488-deere-4400-hst.html 1100 hours YIKES!

For me personally, yes.

But a good portion of that was due to the dealership itself. They listened to me, asked my needs, then suggested the tractor that I bought... not the whiz-bang tractor but the basic one that did everything that I required. (saved me $'s to spend on implements :))

Their reputation was and continues to be earned. I'm confidently supported regarding parts availability and any technical advice is freely given = a mechanic will readily discuss any question I have, or may have.

That's my experience. JD has been worth the money.

No, I didn't say that at all. I did say they all have there pluses and minuses, no matter what you pay. Here, at our very rural location, we need a dealership for service which limits us to just two manufactures.

Sounds like you are absolutely sold on the JD brand. Not that I blame you; I was the same way. For our last tractor my wife said stay under 50K and left the model choice up to me. I said we wanted JD. Spent a month of weekends at JD dealers and simply couldn't find what what I wanted in any one machine. Stopped by Kubota just on a whim one day - back then I always drove on past Kubota without stopping because I thought of them as a rental yard tractor. In fact, I still do. And I don't really care for the pumpkin color. Anyway, for some reason we stopped and they had just the machine we were looking for. It was a matter of features, not price. Ten years later we look back on that purchase as one of those, "I sure am glad we did that" kinda things.

In my opinion, JD will eventually win out. At least I hope so But in the interest of complete disclosure I should say that we own stock in JD and so until JD does win out, I would just as soon that people stop comparing brands of compact tractors.

This summer I'll be refurbishing our 60 year old JD. It'll be mostly little stuff. The basic tractor works fine.

If John Deere products weren't at the correct price point most of the time nobody would buy them. Seeing that their price seems higher than most other brands, there has to be a reason. Maybe more engineering, sales advertising, manufacturing processes, etc, and people will still buy them because of perceived value.

Maybe JD spends more money of machining and fit and aesthetics and quality control and some other manufacturers think that is a dumb so they can skimp and sell their machines cheaper, but longevity will tell in most cases.

Most people try to spend their money wisely even if others think they purchase a higher priced product stupidly.

When in doubt and want an easy solution, just get a green machine.

I'll add to this..

Do I think Deere's products justify their price... obviously no.

Do I think that Deere has a vastly superior dealer network, parts support, knowledgeable technicians, and able to provide a better overall ownership experience than (insert 'value' brand X here). Absolutely.

I don't see paying a higher purchase price as "value" added.

Pay more on the front end you usually get more on the back end (selling). And of course it applies the other way around too. Pay less on the front end and expect less on the back end. So I would consider it a "wash" either way.

Although, I never purchase anything with the thought of what I will get for it if/when I sell it.

I don't either. I buy tools with the expectation that they will be part of my family for a lifetime. But whether I pay more or less on the front end with the expectation of selling it.......or if I buy planning to keep the tool forever, both philosophys only work if the tool is one made to last a long time.

That's part of what makes tractors fun, because the best are designed to last. In the compact tractor world, that's seems particularly true for compact tractors that started out as farm tractors in countries where small farms are the norm.

I couldn't agree with you more.

I'd also add better resale value into the mix too. At least in my neck of the woods.

Would you say the same thing with Kubota and New Holland?

Sure they're worth their price. At least in the AG/utility tractor range. I got priced on 3 different tractors. A 18 JD 5075E, Kubota M7060HD, and a Massey Ferguson 2607H. All 4WD, open station, FEL models with the Deere and Bota having 12x12 power shuttle transmissions. They all seemed like good, capable machines, and all we're quoted within just a few hundred dollars of one another to me. Oddly enough the one that should be the cheapest based on features (the MF) was the highest priced unless I payed with cash. The Kubota was the lowest priced but again lowest to highest price was within a few hundred dollars of one another.

The point being that when you are looking at the larger, more established tractor manufactures JD isn't necessarily overpriced compared to their competition. I would expect Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, and Lexus to price their cars similar to one another, but I would expect to pay less for companies new to the high-end luxury segment trying to compete with these brands like Kia and Hyundai even if their cars are legitimately competitive. Same for tractors. I would pay more for a John Deere, NH, Case IH, Kubota, and MF than I would a comparable LS, Branson, Kioti even if they were as good. Would you tell someone not to buy a Samsung HDTV just because Vizio is a better value?
