I have cedar post here, that my dad put in over 50 years ago, they are still standing...

Just don't try to lean on one!

On the back property we have barbwire fence post with square nails... the posts are all heart redwood and as a kid they were in remarkable condition... not many standing anymore... last livestock was in the 1930's... some post late 1800's?

Back in the late 50's, my father built his own house here in Indiana. He ordered an entire train car of redwood and doug fir from somewhere in the pacific northwest. Had it delivered to the siding in a local lumber yard and worked out a deal with the yard owner to sell him anything my father didn't use at a significant savings to the lumber guy and a significant savings to my dad. Worked out quite well for both of them.

That's a nice log SR. If it were here I would say it looks like stained pine but I don't even know if you have white pine where you are. If it is what do you do with the stained boards ? I like boards with that blue/green stain but the saw mill won't take them.

IF it was a fence post, I wouldn't want to have to dig the hole for it! lol

IT is a white pine, maybe I'll mill it tomorrow?? I don't mind stained WP lumber either...

So, I need to pull down some trees that are hung up on other trees. Some are very large oaks. I own a small 25hp tractor. After some research, it looks like a few snatch blocks and cable will do the trick. I don't believe I need to invest in any sort of winch attachment to do this, as I just cut wood for myself in my own woods. Maybe a hand winch like the More Power Puller would do the job, but that thing is over 300 bucks. So, could someone recommend a few snatch blocks and cable? Other thoughts?

You can use non stretch arborist's rope instead of cable. It's lighter than cable and easier to haul around and to get up into trees. There's a bunch of videos on youtube by a guy named Terry Hale that shows a lot of techniques for pulling trees out, felling, etc. He shows the calculations of the forces involved, which is instructive.

That puller looks nice. I've been using a cheap HF puller but it's only got a 6' throw. I just ordered a Maadam rope puller. It's got less force but will pull an unlimited length. With a throw line and weight I can get a rope a ways up in the tree, getting better leverage.

He can't justify a several thousand dollar winch for a few trees. Get three snatch blocks, several clevises, a couple good lengths of chain and a couple 100' pieces of cable. Do a 3:1 reduction and pull them down with the tractor or a truck.
