Looks like Locust, I think 2nd on the BTU list. I think only "Hedge" or Osage Orange beats it out.:thumbsup:

It's beautiful sanded & finished also, although I suspect you already know that Rob.:thumbsup:
All the window sills & door thresholds were made of it in my old farmhouse, and they make the best fencepost ever to be sunk in the ground!
I hung a gate on a Locust post & drove a RR tie into the ground for the gate "keeper" post. The RR tie rotted off and fell over after about 20 years while the locust post holding the gate up is still there today!

I agree, I have many on my place... if there's thorns on the branches, I would think it would confirm locust.

I've been harvesting as much locust as I can that will turn into timbers for a barn I want to build. It's very hard, and quite rot resistant. Splits easy, burns hot.

It is my understanding that Osage Orange is even more rot-resistant...of course, it is easier to find/make a bunch of fence posts from locust than from O.O.

Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains has fence posts made from black locust 150 years ago that are still standing. Take that Yellawood!

I have cedar post here, that my dad put in over 50 years ago, they are still standing...
