Enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

People were always amazed the Valiant 6 could pull the 1 yard cement trailers... some of my pours back in the day were 10-12 yards... never an issue.

I built the trailer hitch myself... still remember when I was rear ended... no damage to the Valiant but the Honda that hit me was a mess with my hitch buried into it.

It was my daily driver for 20 years and earned it's keep many times over... not bad for a $800 purchase.

I haven't bought another GM since my 1980 Chevy Citation. By 35k miles the camshaft was flat, the clutch slipped, and the clutch cable had broken 50 miles from home. (I drove it home). Put my knee through the upholstry reaching over to unlock the opposite door. etc etc etc . many more issues, leaks, trim falling off. I traded it in at 45k when it couldn't manage freeway speeds. Got $600 tradein on a Trooper that ran 16 years with none of those problems.

I thought waiting until GM had sold a half million Citations was an assurance they had worked out any bugs ....

That was the first new car I bought, paid cash. Fool me once, forget you.

Now I'm looking at the new, improved, next generation, Bolt. It appears to be for today, everything that GM's Citation was suppose to have been in its era.

That list is a small sampling of opinion. To leave out the GM 3800 that was the other go to engine for GM for so many years is a joke. Its combination of durability, power, fuel efficiency, low cost, etc. made it outstanding (they did mention the turbocharged version which was also great.)

To leave out a lot of European and Japanese engines is also a major issue. The VW TDI engine were amazing until they had to load them down with particulate control. Quiet, powerful, efficient, and durable. there were many other smaller engines in Europe that were outstanding as well. the Mitsubishi 3.0L twin turbo was on outstanding engine as well.

Yup. The Toyota 22RE deserves consideration: had one before switching to my ALHs. I have FIVE VW ALH TDIs in the family, in which case I'm a bit biased on the VW TDI -ALH- engines

(I believe them to be comparable to the 5.9L Cummins when talking top diesel engines).

As this is a tractor forum I'd think that there would quite a discussion on the best tractor engines of all time.

It would have to be in another thread topic, but I bet if we all posted our top 10 engines we would see a huge variety. The Honda or Toyota folks would have a list biased that way, VW and Audi fans would pull the list their way, etc. I have had some LS1 cars, Corvettes and Camaros and found that to be a very good engine with great fuel mileage, and you could easily get even more power from it. I had an LS7 Z06 with a tune and cam and it was a beast well north of 600 HP (which used to be a big number...). We run mostly Cummins powered pickups here at our business and we sure like them for their durability and fuel mileage. So my list would be mostly GM and would also include the Cummins. But what about the Hellcat or the Demon? A streetable 700 plus (or 800 plus) engine with a warranty. That needs to make the list.

I guess the problem is that the top 10 list needs to have 20 slots!

As to the comments on the Chevy Citation, ugh, I had one also. But really, the 80's were just a terrible time for cars in general. Most were awful. Quality issues, little tiny 13" tires, new computer technology that was poor, HP that was terrible. What did a big block Chevy 454 put out in the early 80's? Less than 200 HP, or about that. And they got 10-12 mpg. I see very, very few 1980-1995 cars being worth collecting.

But we are pretty off topic for a towing/hauling thread, and I guess I am contributing to that!

They surveyed the readers of Summit Racing Facebook. I think Summit is a specialist in parts for the American V8's.

It's hardly a world-view list.
