Any suggestions on peeling back the paint minimizing impact to original coating?

I think the rubber bumpers are factory original. At least they are on new Wilton vises.

I'd never call myself a painter (I know way more about grease than paint), but I'm thinking of citrus type strippers - might do enough to loosen the top-paint w/o disturbing the bottom coat (????).

If you don't know a furniture restorer to ask, I'd try those forums. I've always found Lee Valley Tools to have interesting and sometimes hard to find products, including paint/stain related. LVT can be very dangerous to your wallet for us toolaholics - don't say I didn't warn you :).....

Great table, and for an older vise, to my eyes it looks pretty near pristine

Can't remember seeing factory rings ..... but at different times when doing a lot of repetitive vise work we used to just use wide band elastics at the stops so you weren't listening to hours of clank-clank.....

Excellent score. Nice to be near Boeing..... I know of guys who drive down from BC to buy their surplus too.

Rgds, D.

I tried posting this vice find a few days back but it looks like I failed to push the right button. Apologies if I am the only one that missed it and it is indeed already posted. Here is a Wilton vise that picked up at an online auction. Funny thing was the item was listed as a steel 4' by 8' shop table. I zoomed in on the pic and noticed the vise shape and quickly realized it was a Wilton bullet style vise. Figuring it would be just a bonus... it turned out to be in great shape considering the weathering and rust. No way to preview in person but turned out to be one of my better finds.

I restored the table and very happy with that... the vise is now torn apart and I am cleaning that up and might repaint. Here the vise is before tear down.

And the table... more or less finished except for the mounting holes in the new steel top cladding. I made removable castor boots for it so it can be adjusted for height and it easily moved.

Mark, I just noticed your vice mount question over on Sodo's workbench thread.

If you need to keep the table clear for outfeed use, square tube trailer hitch receivers would work fine. Lots of horizontal examples on TBN and the rest of the net.

I can post an example of VERTICAL use if you need.

Terry please do post a vertical mount. This sounds like it might be the ticket.

I started 'gently' trying to remove paint to get down to the original Wilton blue/green. Would love to find a rattle can of the OEM paint.

Mark. I've never actually mounted a vice using a vertical receiver but you'll get the general idea from the last bench I built.

Here's what I picked up this morning for $12 CDN. (about $9.50 US)

Indestro, Barcalo Buffalo and Williams wrenches made in USA. A couple of made in Canada Gray's.

Two wooden oval handled 'government issued 'Irwin screwdrivers.

And a set of metric 1/2" HEX drive sockets with no markings other than size.

Nothing exceptional quality-wise except for the William's box end wrench and Irwin screwdrivers. (Screwdrivers are REALLY nice.)
