Seeking advice on welding hook to FEL bucket

My biggest expense is grand children! 6 of them! Now the oldest granddaughter is married, so now I have 7! Why did I think years ago, when my girls grew up, and moved out I would be done with kids? All they did was go off and multiply!:thumbdown::thumbdown::thumbdown:

I welded 2 hooks and a Large D-ring to a plate and welded it INSIDE my bucket.

It works great and I never have to worry about a chain flying off and sling up into the hood or cab. (At least that is the theory. I've never had a chain break on me, thus far.)

I have to join this thread. Not only am I learning about welding, I thought I was the only only one with a wife that has a shoe problem. It almost looks like it's an endemic.Where is the world health organization when us men need them?

Ha I realized that I used the wrong word. Endemic should read epidemic.

I apologize to the OP for this absolute hijack!!!!

I hope he also is learning some welding tricks.

Whenever I can get Shield Arc and other good welders to join in a conversation about welding I try to take advantage of it. I always learn something. :)

ovrszd------You know, I've got other posts out there on how to make a tractor purchase look like it costs almost nothing and how to present the argument to the wife in a manner that will cause her to actually encourage the purchase. Shoes are child's play.

I am going to grind off the single 5/16" hook welded in the center of my bucket put on by previous owner and put 2 on the outsides and something in the middle for a clevis. I went by Northern Tool and bought 2 weld on hooks. They only had one that was cheaper so I got it and one in the bin beside it that was a little more expensive. Now, riddle me this batman, one package says 5,400lb safe work load with 16,200lb break strength. The other package says 6,600 lb safe work load with 19,800lb break strength. Now look inside the package, the hooks have 3/8" G70 on one side and the other side says WLL,6,600lbs. Why would they put the same hook in different packaging only to charge a little more money? Why not just charge one amount and use one package if it's the same product?

Maybe someone switched the hooks in the bags at the store, they are in small zip-lock bags right?

No, they are sealed bags.

Here's something to consider. On my tractors, I welded two hooks on each bucket. One in line with each cylinder and they have a plated welded on the bucket underneath them. No center hook is welded on the bucket.

Instead, I just run a chain between the two hooks and hook a small chain with a grab clevis (slip clevis on the other end) to the middle of the chain. This way, the weight is distributed by pulling on two hooks rather than just one hook in the center. It also means the bucket is far less likely to bend in the middle. I have a 5520, 89HP Deere that I have this arrangement on and I regularly lift the maximum weight that I can (3000 #?) using only the method described. No center hook or clevis or whatever is needed.

I can't count the buckets I have seen with a hook in the middle that are also bent in the middle. The two hook and chain method would have prevented it.
