All winches are rated on the first wrap.

That's what I would have thought too. Sawyer Rob pointed out in a different thread that his model of winch is rated at the last wrap. I don't think they make that model anymore, or if they do, they changed the rating method. Anyway, I think that was the situation. He might remember better than me. I think it happened in the "skidding winches" thread.

One thing to note is that when some winch manufacturers (they might all be this way now) list the pull rating, that number is for the line pull at the first wrap on the drum.

The reason I mention this is because if you only need say 80' of cable (just an example) but you've got 200', the extra cable is only hindering your pulling capacity.

Of course, you can always make it shorter, but there's no way to put 230' of cable on a machine that is only supposed to have 165'. :)

It also depends on drum width - the wider the drum, the less layers of cable wrapped around it. However, I must admit I've never compared drum widths among various brands.

If you size the winch right for your tractor and your application, it's not an issue. I find the winch I have a good match for my tractor. If I were doing this as a business, rather than for myself and a group of friends, I'd have a larger winch and a significantly larger tractor. There are always options: remove a log from the twich or cut off some length, or even double the line (I've only done that once, using my self releasing snatch block as the block for doubling).

You are right, I did say that, as my manual states exactly what I wrote on that thread...

The advertised rating of my winch is at the last wrap, and the first wrap is much higher, according to my manual.

I don't know if it's right or not, but that's what my manual states...

It is pretty meaningless to spec the pull on the last wrap unless you also spec the length
and diameter of the cable that is remaining on the drum when you make the pull so in Rob's case they must have done that I assume. Specing on the first wrap makes it independent of the cable.

Another thing now that I think about it, it seems like the operator absolutely must know the maximum pull rating, which is the at the first wrap. That's the number that every other rigging component must be rated at or above. Knowing the rating at the last wrap is well and good, but the other number is necessary for safe operation.

Not quite tractors, but this is my dad dropping off a load of wood (collected at his house with his L3710).
